Statement from the President on Iran

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary _______________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release June 20, 2009

Statement from the President on Iran

The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.

As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.

Martin Luther King once said - "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples’ belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.

What the hell does all that mean?

"As I said in Cairo"...arrogant ass. He thinks every speech he gives is the Sermon on the Mount.

"arc of the moral universe"...has to be the dumbest MLK quote ever. What the heck does it mean? What is the "moral universe"? What difference is it how long it is?

As the death toll rises, I wonder how many in Iran will look to Iraq and think how lucky they were, to have the U.S. come in, take out the trash, and return the nation to it’s people.

Pathetic.

Obama is a week late. He has no moral standing now to make any statement on liberty and freedom. It is clear that political pressure is why he is making this statement.

Mr. Obama, you could have sided with those that cry for freedom and liberty. Instead, you prefer to dine with tyrants and dictators.

Your silence was compliance. Now see the result: the brutal massacre of the Iranian people today.

How cool would it be for something along the lines of: I have just outlawed the Soviet Union. The bombers leave in 5 minutes.?

Obama proves once again his stature as a tool.

Yeah, if he can’t say for a week, a few kind words for their freedom, why would we think he would for ours? He doesn’t.

“Does the haloed one think the mullahs give a flying fig newton what Martin Luther King said.”

My thoughts too. He’s speaking to an American audience here, not to the Iranians, IMO. Altogether an odd speech.

His “statement” was just a fart... all hot air, stinking of liberal claptrap, and lacking any substance.

Why would I expect anything but milquetoast from the Empty Suit?

I wish I could be more optimistic about this revolution. If it had happened a year ago, we would have had a president who would have helped fund and arm the freedom fighters. Now, we have a Chamberlain who wants to appease the Persian Nazis.

Nice post.

Uhbama is pathetically cowardly. I really hate having a coward in the WH. Who has chosen people of equal cowardice to advise him...the unethical and weak have to surround themselvew with the same in order to function unchallanged.

He has no balls. I really don't think he does.

He certainly does not hear the cries of the Iranian people. He wants a Supreme Ct justice who understands compassion...we want a PRESIDENT who understands the importance of FREEDOM in every human's life and who understands fully that FREEDOM IS NOT FREE.

What a dolt.

There’s one word I didn’t hear and that word is DEMOCRACY.
