CAIRO (AP) — One of Iran's most powerful men may be playing a key role behind closed doors in the country's escalating postelection crisis.

Former president and influential cleric Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani has made no public comment since Iran erupted into confrontation between backers of hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and reformists who claim he stole re-election through fraud.

But Iranian TV has shown pictures of Rafsanjani's daughter, Faezeh Hashemi, speaking to hundreds of opposition supporters. And Rafsanjani, who has made no secret of his distaste for Ahmadinejad, was conspicuously absent from an address by the country's supreme leader calling for national unity and siding with the president.

Lol, yeah it is a cool name. However, he’s a millionaire mullah thug like everyone else in the regime. He’s sort of “Nutjob Lite.” He may be opposed to Ahmadinnerjacket, but he’s not a whole lot better.

“Isn’t Rafsanjani one of those Iranian “moderates” we have been talking about and wanting for oh say the last 30 years?”

No, he certainly is Not.

Rafsanjani was president for 2 terms starting in 1989.
He has an arrest warrant from Argentina for his involvement in the bombing of the jewish community center in Buenos Aires in ‘94, and ordered the assassination of exiled Kurdish leaders at Mykonos restaurant in Germany in 1992, and he was president during the arrest, disappearance & chain murders (executions) of hundreds of intellectuals in the late 1990’s.(a purge)

Latest tweet from PersianKiwi in Tehran:
Faeze Hashemi Rafsanjani arrested yesterday - confirmed -

Faeze Hashemi Rafsanjani and family members being held prisoner in military compound - #Iranelection -

Mousavi - We are(Independently) working on a gerneral Strike Plan. Please help us with your ideas if you have expertise #Iranelection RT

There's some tweets on Mousavi being arrested, but I'm regarding them as disinformation until I see better confirmation.

Help the People of Iran, and setup a Twitter Proxy for them to continue getting news out of Iran!

I did it, it took 15 minutes for Windows users.

Directions and software can be found here: Austin Heap - How to setup a Twitter Proxy for Iran

If you have basic Windows experience (installing software, editing a file with Notepad) and have bandwidth to spare, help out the Citizens of Iran in their fight for freedom!

No confirmation of his whereabouts by anybody on the ground in Iran that I’ve been able to find...that, and the fact that he’s still able to get messages out seem to mean that he’s NOT arrested.
