WILLIE BROWN: From one ayatollah to another
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 6/21/9 | Willie Brown

Posted on 06/21/2009 2:10:25 PM PDT by SmithL

When I was speaker, they called me the Ayatollah of the Assembly.

Well, I have some pointers for my counterpart in Iran.

One, never call an election until at least 90 percent of the vote is counted. At the very least, you should wait until people stop voting before declaring someone the winner.

Two, when you do issue the final count, try your best not to report more ballots cast than voters. The first results I saw out of Iran had over 100 percent of the folks voting.

And three, if you're going to try something funny, at least make it close so it looks real.

A lot of my gay friends are upset with President Obama over his refusal to back same-sex marriage or to end the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, but those are two things he is not going to do.

Like a growing number of people, gays are starting to realize that the president is a little more conservative than they thought. Gays are unhappy today. Liberal health care advocates will be unhappy tomorrow.

Much of that disappointment, however, is based on who they projected Obama would be, rather than who he really is.

Right now, Obama is the most popular figure on the planet. He represents inspiration and hope to people all over the world, even people who have no idea what he really stands for. That's his trump card.

There are precincts in Philly where Algore got 110% of the vote. Of course, ACORN is active there as well.

WILLIE BROWN: From one ayatollah to another

Willie Brown shows us how the political sausage is made. Everybody knew that he was a cheat; now he's a self-admitted cheat. Sweet.

I was at an event where he was the featured speaker and he was talking about fund raisers and the expectations of people who purchase tickets. He said that if someone comes up to him and lets him know that they bought 20 tickets at 500 dollars apiece to sponsor a table he would listen to them and consider what they are saying. But if someone just bought one ticket and wanted something, he said in essence, What the hell am I going to do for someone for 500 dollars?

It WAS funny. And at least he was being honest!

That is different from Philadelphia how?

Why? We do that here all the time.

Doesn't seem to matter one bit here in the People's Soviet of Washington.

He writes a column now, and I remember one piece of advice he offered:

If you're planning on dining out in Oakland, be sure and order the soup - that way you'll have somewhere to dump your jewelry when the joint gets robbed.

Well, I’ll say this for Willie Brown. He may be a defter election stealer than the Ayatollahs, but at least he doesn’t send out snipers to shoot young girls down in the street.

“Two, when you do issue the final count, try your best not to report more ballots cast than voters.”

In other words, manipulate the election results realistically. Cheating is fine, just make it look close...

Willie Brown is an extreme liberal, but I always listen to what he has to say, because he is up front about it. He is not phony and he knows his business. His insights are excellent, even though I don’t agree with his values at all.

Mr. Speaker, I know what the Assembly Republicans were calling you, and it may have sounded a little like “ayatollah”...but it wasn’t.

No, I don't. His actions as speaker set the stage for a lot of what California's experiencing right now. So, no, I don't gotta.
