The Islamic extremists who bombed the nightclub chose it as a target because it was a 'decadant' nightclub where men and women dared to gather together, dance and have fun. Some sort of memorial at or near the site is appropriate, but converting the site into a sad little 'peace' museum where a handful of people shuffle through gives the gives the terrorists exactly what they want. A Briton chieftan once said of the Romans: "Where they make a desert, they call it 'peace'". A genuine way to honor the innocent victims of Islamic facsism is to build a nightclub that is bigger and better, where crowds of people will continue to gather to enjoy life and celebrate freedom in spite of the forces of death and evil.
The same goes for the World Trade Center redevelopment. A memorial should be part of it, but it should be a vibrant place bustling with people engaging in all the busy activities of life.
