Time to go home, kids: What Bibi should have said

June 14, 2009 was a sad day for Israel and her true friends the world over, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu caved in to the demands of the U.S. Imposter-in-Chief and whoever it is that is yanking his strings. Israel's Last Great (human) Hope, who has been telling us for years now how he has realized his former errors and repented of his appeasing ways, has slid down the same slimy drain again less than three months after taking office.

Despite incorporating conditions he knew would be rejected into his hopelessly naïve remarks, the twice-elected and once-disgraced Netanyahu has flip-flopped on his stand against a Palestinian state, disgracing himself once again. The Palestinian leadership, which still hasn't begun to keep the agreements it signed in the 1993 Oslo Accords, rejected the speech immediately. But you can bet the only two words Netanyahu said that will remain in the public consciousness are: “Palestinian state.”

With the entire world listening, here is what he SHOULD have said:

It's time to go home, kids.

It's been a long time since you moved in with us. I know you weren't thinking about how this would end when you got here, and to be honest, neither were we. You were new in the neighborhood, and small, and even kind of disarming in a peculiar sort of way. Some of our own kids actually felt sorry for you and begged us to let you stay. After all, they explained, your own parents had thrown you out and you had nowhere else to go.

You seemed fairly well-behaved back then and certainly didn't threaten our family, so we gave in. As adults with children of our own to protect, we should have known better and put our foot down, but we didn't.

Before long, the old, ingrained habits you had learned elsewhere began to surface: lying, rock-throwing, breaking the rules that our own children were obliged to live by. Not all of you, of course, but enough of you that this defensive move has become necessary if our family is to survive. And we do intend to survive.

Not content with our peaceful roof over your head, you demanded bigger and better rooms and more and more entitlements. Perhaps out of shock over your brazenness, we responded by turning parts of our home over to you for your exclusive use. We removed our treasured family heirlooms and relocated our children, who rightfully owned those rooms, to other parts of the house, even over their objections and tears.

When you reached adolescence, your attitude reached adolescence too. As you cavorted with violent friends in the neighborhood, your behavior toward our children became increasingly violent. You no longer accepted responsibility for your misdeeds, and your ongoing temper tantrums finally brought our relationship full circle. No longer content to be guests – even rude and ill-behaved ones – you made clear your intent to take over our home and throw us into the street, while the hooligans you took up with along the way cheered you on.

Now as snarling, stampeding adults, you contribute little to the family that took you in, not even a word of thanks for saving you from starvation. Instead of rocks, you now sneak military weapons into the house and use them against our family. We have had to build 25-foot-high steel and concrete security barriers down the middle of our living room to protect ourselves from you. Our children should not have to live like this.

Having squandered your adolescence in petty crime instead of learning civilized behavior and a useful trade, you still cannot make your own way in the world. And you hate our natural children for not being like you are.

You demand that we continue to feed you and clothe you and provide you with charitable medical benefits while you continue acting like wild animals toward us and toward each other. You don't care that these expenses all come out of our natural children's pockets, and you don't have the common sense to be ashamed that you take everything you can and give nothing in return. Not even respect.

Initially we welcomed you, just as most civilized homeowners would have done, as orphans of the storm. But you have become so much more than that now. You have turned from refugees into home invaders, and you are holding us hostage. What supreme irony that, all the while we thought we were sheltering you, you thought you were colonizing us!

Now get out. You are no longer welcome here. You have made yourselves our enemies and you threaten our very existence. Our children deserve better than this. If you need help leaving, we will help you with that. If you cannot manage to find the door we will escort you there ourselves and open it for you. Any unfinished business you have here can be concluded by post or e-mail or telephone. You have 48 hours to pack. If you cannot do this in a timely manner, our national defense forces will assist you in your departure.

The party's over. Go home now.
