Mystery surrounded South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, whose whereabouts haven't been revealed since Thursday, when he took off in a sport-utility vehicle normally driven by a bodyguard, turned off his mobile phone and stopped communicating with his office, family and close political allies.
On Monday, South Carolina elected leaders considered temporarily transferring the governor's power to another state official, according to people familiar with the situation. Officials decided against the move after being told by aides to the governor that they knew Mr. Sanford's location. ... Republican state Sen. John "Jake" Knotts, a former police officer and a political opponent of the governor, said law-enforcement division officials told him Mr. Sanford had frequently told agents to step out of his state-provided car while he was on the phone, or ordered them to leave the keys in the car when he was dropped off at the governor's mansion at night, so he could go out for a few hours. ... Mr. Sanford is known for absences that have created issues in the past. In 2003, soon after his first election, he attended Air Force Reserve training for two weeks, but chose not to hand over power to the lieutenant governor. Also that year, he went to Bermuda for a yacht race during a contentious fight over budget priorities, including one of his tax proposals.
Tom Davis, who was Mr. Sanford's chief of staff before winning a seat in the state Senate last year, said it wasn't uncommon for the governor to take a few days off after the legislative session ended. Often, Mr. Sanford went fishing or hunting, he said.
"He's just doing what he's always done," Mr. Davis said. "This is well within the norm for what he'd do."

prayers for him and his family
Has Zero demanded his presence at the WH because he is ‘con(sss)erened’ over his defiance of $$$?
Out looking for Obama’s birth certificate?
He may be gone for awhile.
No mystery about it at all. See here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2277017/posts?page=182#182
Concerned but I don’t see the chaos here. Is there another South Carolina I don’t know about?
Not cool on Father's Day. He has three young kids.
He turned down stimulus money and is now branded “crazy” because he has a private life for a few days? This story stinks.
So what if he went out for a pack of smokes and ended up black-out partying in LA with Harry Nilsson for a few months?
Read the update in the body of the article.
Agreed. WTF is Sanford doing not telling his family where he is?
strange..if he wants to go fishing or attend reserve training, fine. that shouldn’t be a problem.
not communicating his whereabouts to his family is sick and not communicating to his staff is dangerous and irresponsible. he is a governor with actual responsibilities!
i think i just had enough for that weirdo..i don’t want that kind of dangerous friek anywhere near White House..I want full-time president.
heck..this week we have lost Sanford and Ensign..not looking good. still, about one year left to find somebody..
Why, with him going away you would think he thinks we can survive on our own for a few days with the government telling us what to do.
Sanford has it right!
We have a governor out here in Kansas, whose name I can’t quiet recall. He will probably report for work tomorrow, but how would we know? If he were to go missing for weeks, the state would probably remain in the dark. The only time that we know that these people are on the job is when they do something stupid. This was a daily occurence with our present governor’s predecessor, Kathaleen Sebelius, but the new governor seems to be taking a slightly lower profile.
Did you know Tom Davis is RELATED to Sanford? Don’t you think he’d know where he is?
SImilar article was posted this morning...Updated later to say that he ws fine and had been in contact with his office. The weren’t disclosing his whereabouts.
What makes you think that either of these points is true?
Suicide possible, murdered is more likely IMO.
