Why not just offer a lump sum award of $5 billion and a 99 year patent to whatever car maker can develop a 150hp engine that delivers a 300 mile range with the CO2 output of like a gallon of gas?

All these grants, awards, loans don’t encourage a particular goal. They’re just burning cash for the sake of burning cash.

Use a 99 year patent as an incentive and you’ll have to offer a lot less up front cash.

What would that have done for my 1965 Chrysler 300 with the 383 ci engine?

What would that have done?

Plenty, you see, almost every car burns fuel wastefully metaphorically like a locomotive burning logs of wood or lumps of coal, that's why they need another heat engine underneath (catalytic converter) to consume the extra fuel the engine didn't use.

The only reason it didn't use it was because the un or underburnt bits didn't get surrounded enough by oxygen.

If you raise the pressure from what dribbles out of todays fuel injectors or yesterdays carburetors (which are just little toilets flushing gas), each molecule of fuel will be able to go "bang" increasing the explosive push down on your pistons that eventually turn your wheels.

And by burning all the little molecules of fuel in the first place where they need to be burned, all you get in water vapor and glorious carbon dioxide to nourish our plants.

Isn't it a wonderful world?

Oh yeah, your engine will last forever and stay clean because all that crap that used to gum everything up was consumed properly in the first place.
