Air France fantasy
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | June 22, 2009 | Editorial

These days, it seems only George W. Bush and global warming can cause tragedies. Guess which one is being blamed for the June 1 crash of Air France Flight 447? Russian climatologist Aleksey Kokorin, head of Russia's World Wildlife Fund Climate Program, postulates the Airbus A330-203 broke up over the Intertropical Convergence Zone because of decades of emissions from tailpipes and smokestacks. But like the global-warming applesauce, his theory is based firmly in the future.

"A consequence of global warming is that the frequency and severity of such (severe weather conditions) will be higher," he told an interviewer. "Unfortunately, the risk for airplanes, especially in tropical areas above water, will be higher. (our emphasis)." Except that the earth about a decade ago entered a cooling phase many scientists believe could last another 30 years. So what he says will happen is a matter of debate (in which global warmists refuse to participate because they know they cannot win) and has nothing to do with what has happened.

The zone where Flight 447 went down is a difficult region for aircraft because of its frequent strong thunderstorms. But thousands traverse it every year, and except for bumpy rides, reach their destination without incident. Moreover, the National Weather Service says plane crashes caused solely by severe weather, in the zone and out, are exceedingly rare, thanks to everything from advances in construction and forecasting to pilot training.

And the cause of this crash remains a mystery. Maybe the Airbus suffered a catastrophic mechanical malfunction. Perhaps it was pilot error. The Internet still is crackling with talk of a meteor strike. Since investigators have linked two passengers to Islamic extremist groups, it could have been terrorism. That's speculation, too, but at least it's credible, unlike Mr. Kokorin's theory of the perfect global-warming storm, which sounds like the plot of an Al Gore-Oliver Stone film.

But even if the crash was storm-related, the 228 people who perished still would be victims of the weather, not death by climate change, which is never this quick.

We all know that bad weather causing the death of human beings is an entirely new phenomenon.

More likely the superglue holding the Airbus’s tail on, failed.

I know the global warmists keep saying this. I was just wondering if it's based on anything real. Anyone know? Beyond summer is hurricane season, which would seem to be balanced by winter being blizzard season . . .

Just outside my front door it’s hot and muggy. I’m sure that has something to do with global warming, even though ever June23rd in my memory, it’s been hot and muggy outside that door.

On the other hand, right here by my computer it’s nice and cool and I have a tall glass of the best drink in town - ice water.

LOL! Here in Boston, it hasn’t made it over the 50s or low 60s yet! I love it myself, but a lot of people are complaining, though one caller to a radio show pointed out, “Think how much colder it would be if it weren’t for global warming!

In the US military, all mishaps are predetermined to be caused by man made mistakes. Weather, God, etc cannot be singled out for blame, only human mistakes.

Ted "Mr. CNN" Turner has said that global warming will turn people into cannibals in 10-30 years. Not sure why that came to mind as I read this. ;-) Thanx !

I've heard only one other poster even mention concern about the 'glue'.

I think there is a high probability that the tail could have separated from the fuselage.

If lightning followed the path of least resistance (the glue), it could have changed the molecular properties of the adhesive, weakening or even ruining it completely.

It would correlate with the entire vertical stabilizer and rudder being found in one piece.
