House Democrats unsure of global warming bill's passage (cap and tax)

WASHINGTON (CNN) – House Democratic leaders are furiously lobbying their members and moderate Republicans to support a landmark energy bill in the face of resistance from some conservative members of their own party, and staunch opposition from the GOP — roadblocks that are making it difficult to find the 218 votes necessary to pass the measure, according to Democratic leadership aides.

A vote on the Clean Energy and Security Act, which would restrict emissions of green house gases and require use of alternative energy in an effort to slow the effects of global warming, is scheduled for Friday.

The legislation's lead sponsors held a pep rally outside the Capitol on Wednesday to whip up support for the legislation's passage.

"We are going to pass the most important energy and environment bill in history," declared Rep Ed Markey, D-Masachusetts, chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. "We are going to reduce the carbon we send up into the atmosphere but at the same time we are going to begin to back out the oil that we import from countries that we should not be importing it from."

This falls in the category of what is the dumbest thing a government could do in a recession.....The Dems want to tax American hundreds of billions of dollars for a problem which the public see as lowest on the totem pole. If the GOP can’t kick everyone of these idiots out of office next cycle, there is no reason for them to exist.

That Markey and Waxman are now in charge of the US's energy policy is horrific.

Can't believe that these low-lifes have achieved this kind of power.

Same goes for Barney Frank.

It is time we start a party called the Fiscal Conservatives....If the GOP wants to join us, fine. If not, they can get lost.

This bill has to be stopped. It will be a complete disaster for the economy and poor and middle class families. Of course, Barry and his Rat friends could care less becuase they are gonna make a lot of money and gain a lot of power.

This story is good news.

Looks like the Dems are 18 votes short at this point. Only 24 more hours to lobby.

Despite concerns about not getting any Republicans to ultimately support the bill

So Boehner must have strong-armed Mary Bono into NOT voting yes. I hope the Repubs can hold their line. Stock market will rally if this thing dies tomorrow.

“It is time we start a party called the Fiscal Conservatives....”

Great idea in concept, but one problem with that is when a candidate announces him/herself as a “fiscal conservative,” it often means “far left on social issues.”

How about “Free Republic” party?

Markey forgot to say that they were also going to raise the price of a gallon of gasoline by $2+ per gallon, put millinos out of work and raise the price of every consumer item or food product.

Senator McCaskill. I propose that the new Clean Energy and Security Act bill be re-named. I propose it be called “the final nail in the coffin” of the US economy.

This is pure madness. The only thing government achieves when getting involved with any part of our economy, is to make things worse. This will make energy even more unaffordable and force people with limited incomes to choose between food, medicine and heating or cooling their homes.

Stick to national defense, building roads and bridges. This is what government SHOULD do.

Any blue-dogs who cast a “yes” vote on this will need to be looking for other employment opportunities after November 2010.

Kind of. However, most of those far-left on social issues are not really fiscal conservatives. Being liberal on social issues and fiscally conservative have inherent conflicts. They just say that for votes. I think it is important to have a name which unquestionably identifies what the party stands for. Right now the GOP brand stands for nothing.

Gee, I was so hoping that the Democrats would succeed in raising energy costs for all of us, while at the same time handing out tax dollars to their supporters.

I sure hope so. I called Kay Granger's (R-TX12) office and she is vehemently against the bill for all the right reasons, as I knew she would be, but I needed to voice my support for her strong stand. I tried contacting Chet Edwards (D-TX17) but he only accepts calls from folks who live in his district. I hope those constituents make his life miserable if he supports Cap and Tax. I can't understand how they keep voting for this man who supports the party of Pelosi, Waxman, Frank, and Murtha.

I'm not so optimistic. If they didn't have the votes (or thought they had the votes), they would be forcing the issue right now.
