Woman jumps off Coronado bridge after pursuit

SAN DIEGO — An apparently suicidal woman led officers on a wild, high-speed chase Thursday morning that ended when she jumped off the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and survived.

The woman stopped on the westbound lanes in the middle of the bridge just after 10 a.m. and got out of her car, the California Highway Patrol said. Witnesses said she put her hands and feet on the railing and appeared distraught, the CHP said.

She stood there about five minutes, then got back into her car and drove into Coronado, where officers began following her after receiving 911 calls. She drove around for a few minutes and then turned and headed back over the bridge at speeds estimated at about 75 mph, the CHP said.

She continued north on Interstate 5, where she was clocked at 90 mph as she approached Sassafras Street, the CHP said.

At one point she tried to get off the freeway but changed her mind and continued heading north until she exited at Sea World Drive, ran a red light and then got back on the freeway heading south.

She got off at Washington Street, headed south on Kettner Boulevard, ran a truck off the road, then got back on the highway again and continued until she reached the bridge – still driving at speeds of 90 mph, the CHP said.

The woman then stopped her car and immediately ran to the rail and jumped off.

Rescuers pulled her from the water about 10.25 a.m. “She was communicating with them,” said Coronado police Sgt. Dan Schicker.

One westbound lane of the bridge was briefly closed as officers investigated the incident and removed the woman's car.

Her medical condition has not been released.

It’s sad that anyone feels the need to jump. Sounds like she almost chickened out before being chased.

Hi Hildy. Yes, I’ve seen the signs. I think my sister-in-law once used it. I know she once stopped her car on the bridge and threatened to jump off. She’s fine now; a very religious lady who volunteers at Scripps Chula Vista.

Really?

I have to say, most things the gooobermint does defy the imagination, but that’s actually a rather forward-thinking idea.

Who’da thunk it?

It’s funny, I was just talking about this last night. When I was a reserve on North Island, we would routinely get stopped in traffic because some jerk was threatening to jump.

After about 30 minutes you wish they would just hurry up and do it.

I don’t think anyone uses the phones.

You have to think that since she survived, she probably should rethink the suicide plan.

One guy jumped and took a K-9 with him. The dog died and he lived, but it should have been the other way around.
It is a good bridge to jump from. It has a low railing and a long drop.

I've gone on the harbor tour there a number of times and it looks even further in person! Hopefully this will be life changing experience for her now that she survived.

Soooo, I’m guessing that installing speakers on the bridge that play Van Halen 24/7 might be a bad idea?

A woman in Seattle sued the city because she stopped her car on the bridge and thought about jumping for hours while people yelled “Just Jump you #$%&#$*”.

If you know traffic in Seattle, you might realize how shutting down a bridge for an hour would snarl things up.

What a drama queen. If you want to kill yourself there is no reason to make it a public spectacle and inconvenience a large portion of an entire city.

Yes drama queen for sure but I don’t think she really wanted to kill herself. She wanted people to beg her NOT to kill herself and then to see how troubled she was and to fix it for her. How very sad.

Well, it would solve the traffic problem such people cause.

Specifically:

“Might as well jump. (JUMP!)
Go ahead, jump.
Might as well jump. (JUMP!)
Go ahead, jump.”

The funniest part is that the song isn’t about suicide at all.

Waaaay back when in my Navy days, one would have to jump off the ferry if considering suicide.

I really gotta come back down there for a visit.
