Who benefits most from Sanford meltdown? Californian (that's right) Mitt Romney

With South Carolina governor Mark Sanford still wondering how to solve a problem called Maria, and GOP biggies falling by the wayside, a Californian may be poised to now take the reins as the leader of the GOP 2012 possible presidential pack.

Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, now claims the Golden State as his full-time home since he bought a lovely beachfront estate in La Jolla where and wife Ann now reside.

[...]

Sanford's Maria meltdown has meant that the stash of GOP possible presidential hopefuls and leadeers is shrinking fast -- with some GOPers say Romney now looks stronger than ever.

Why?

With his move to California, there's now four states where Romney now has direct connections and a potential base of supporters: count Massachusetts, of course, along with Michigan, where his dad was governor, and Utah, the Mormon stronghold where he managed the winter Olympics.

Romney didn't connect with voters enough to come out ahead in the 2008 race against Arizona Sen. John McCain. But does he now have a chance for another bite at the apple? Some GOPers say he's the go-to guy now: he's been through the process, he has a national organization, the name recognition, all sorts of friends in high places who can make good contacts for him -- and he's a squeaky clean family guy unlikely to have a Sanford-like meltdown. Besides, he's working on a policy book: "a sure sign he's going to run for office,'' says one well-connected GOP insider.

So this gives him a real serious lead over former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee -- now a radio and TV commentator -- Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who still has a strong core of GOP fans.

True, how true. Only a ‘dim bulb’ would attract 20,000 people to a small NY town and not realize that she’s been ‘Quayled’ by the media.

“You people” really need to get a clue.

It doesn't matter how many people she draws, she is a light weight and unaccomplished. All she has done with her life is barley get out of college like some Reagan like “C” student at a non ivy league school and manage to become one of the most successfully popular Governors in the US in many years.

Like that is some big deal vs breeding and education backed by tons of personal wealth.

As much as I loath Palin because I see her playing lots of games, I would still vote for her. Anyone on the GOP side is better then Obama. I am not sure if I am completely right about Palin, so I will always need to keep that possibility on the back burner. I know I like Romney a whole heck of a lot better though. He seems like a real leader not some game player. I could be completely wrong about Palin, she could be the exact opposite of the way I see her. I hope so. I really want the good people to win.

I think that Sarah should have a big rally outside the building where her birth certificate is stored, and have cameras from all the networks follow her inside, as she pays the $10 fee and requests an official copy of her b.c.—in fact, requests a hundred copies with official seal for distribution to the press.

Then, she goes outside and announces her candidacy.

Without once mentioning Obama’s birth certificate.

In fact, grassroots Republicans should demand all possible Presidential candidates release multiple official copies of their birth certificates. It should be brought up at every debate.

Without ever mentioning Obama. Just keep bringing up the birth certificates of all the REPUBLICANS, over and over and over.

Mitt Romney is wasting his energy and money again. His only record is that of a far left liberal. He won’t make it through the primaries again. It’s Palin or Huckabee next time. Palin because she is the most popular republican since Reagan or Huckabee if Palin does not run because he is the only one besides Palin who can bring the christain right to the table and they will be hungry this time. Also because he is using his pac to help elect conservative canidates next year and will have IOU’s , sort of the Nixon from 1966 path. Meanwhile Mitt is going on rino listening tours with a Bush. That spells loser with a liberal record.

That said, Romney is a formidable contender. He'll have the beltway establishment behind him. They don't like Huckabee or Palin, and Pawlenty and the rest are to unknown.

Romney isn't as formidable a candidate as his boosters would like to claim. Mitt Romney was in it long before Mike Huckabee, yet Huckabee quickly and easily out-maneuvered him.

And never forget that quite a bit of the money Romney spent was his own money. By February of 2008, he had lent his campaign 35 million dollars (^). I'm not sure of the total by the time it was over, but according to the article, by February, 2008 Romney had lent his campaign more than 28% of it's total funds.

My biggest fear is that Romney will once again use his own money to run his campaign and choke out candidates who have a better chance at being elected, but who have to raise money the old fashioned way.

Mitt Romney & his formidable ego will probably run, squashing more promising candidates, and paving the way for a second Obama term.

I think it was more tham 35M. He raised around 60M and loaned himself 45M for a total of 105M or so. So it was about 45%.

And yes he was outmaneuvered by Huckabee, but for a 1 term Gov of MA who no one had heard of as January, 2007, he did ok. He went up against John McCain who was a famous war hero and had 100% name ID and a whole organziation from 2000 and Rudy who was a hero after 9/11 and led throughout 2007. Also Fred who was the great conservative hope and a famous actor. Given where he stared he did ok.

And there’s no McCain or Rudy in this field. No nationally known war hero or national hero, no political stars like they were. Pawlenty, Thune, Daniels and the others mentioned aren’t really in their league. So he starts from a much better place.

I think you’ll see a lot of the beltway and establishment GOP coalesce behind him and quickly, try and crowd out anyone else, like they did with W in 99.

I mean, I think it’s going to be either Romney, Huckabee or Palin barring something totally unforeseen happening. So, given that he’ll be a main contender, he’s ipso facto formidable. It’s very rare that someone runs away with it. Romney and Huck challenged McCain. McCain challenged W. Buchanan challenged Dole. Dole challenged 41. 41 challenged Reagan. Reagan challenged Ford. Same on the dem side. Gore was relaly the only guy in the last 40 years or so who ran away with the nomination in either party.

He seems like a real leader not some game player.

After 16 years in politics when we look at Romney we cannot see any political leadership whatsoever, anywhere, at anytime, ever.

Palin has 17 years in politics and her fame and reputation comes from leadership, she has been a maverick and a king killer from the get go, it is her leadership that makes her the number one choice of republicans and especially conservative republicans.

The irony in the post you quote is almost unbearably funny.

Mitt's entire political career has been one big game, played against the people. I am for it now I am not is the ultimate game.

As far as Palin, some folks have an agenda, we hear her speeches, and they are full of the issues that surround her and her state and when need be the nation.

Paul Ryan, Congressman from my home state of Wisconsin:
Young, good looking, consistently Conservative, solid family man, Midwestern values.
Not enough experience?
He has more than the UCO (Useless Community Organizer) when he was chosen by the Libs to become their EIC(Emperor in Chief).

Look at me I’m Mitt Romney, I have “connections to 4 states”! 3 of which Obama would be certain to kick my butt in.
