The Harrisburg Chapter of the NAACP is calling on Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell to suspend some civil liberties and impose martial law in the city to halt the wave of recent lawlessness.
Chapter President Stanley Lawson also called on Rendell to bring in the state National Guard for at least 30 days and to impose a curfew. In June, there have been at least 12 shootings, many of them in the daytime, including a man killed Wednesday at a busy city intersection during the lunch hour.
"The Guard is for floods and natural disasters. I don't know any more of a natural disaster than of our young people being killed," he said at a general membership meeting of about 25 people at Capitol Presbyterian Church, 14th and Cumberland streets.
"It's time for some real action," he said. "Right now the important thing is to stop this madness."
"We're beyond what the Harrisburg police department can do. We need help," Lawson said.
Martial law is a system of rules that takes effect when the military takes control of the normal administration of justice, normally in times of emergency.
At about the same time Lawson was speaking, Rendell was at another community meeting in Harrisburg where he promised to have state police patrol city streets to increase the presence of law enforcement.

I drove through Harrisburg a couple of years ago. It reminded me a lot of Washington, DC...govt offices and some yuppified cuteness, surrounded by nasty slums.
Most inner cities are shackled by political correctness, resulting in the neutering of the police force, resulting in lawlessness and anarchy.
This is a result of liberal policies left unchecked.
Why don’t they just pass a city law banning guns? That would solve all their problems. /s
What are the demographics of the shooters and the areas these crimes are committed? That’s what you have police for idiots (speaking to the NAACP of course), it is their DUTY to enforce the law to suppress violent people but then again, it is the nature of the beast to only be able to show up after it’s all over. It they are PROactive then it will be “profiling” right?
Get a handle on it and quit whining about “rights”. PC always comes back around to bite one in the butt. I always appreciate this give-up mentality and refusal to see the truth.
Ask Obama to do and and wait six months for it to happen.
Imagine, the state capital is in need of martial law.
That story about lowbrows taking over our society was right. Anyone who thinks a gunshot is a natural occurrence like floods or locusts has about as low a brow as can be imagined. I live not too far from Harrisburg, and the problems there are the same as in any other inner city ghetto. The solution starts by getting rid of these so-called leaders, who are nothing more than race hustling thieves and agitators. In other words, community organizers.
Didn’t they knew disaster would ensue after the Government promoted single motherhood?
The problem is that most people who live in the ghetto tolerate crime and go after the cops when they try to enforce the laws. They also routinely vote for politicians who are soft on crime.
I.e. they have no one to blame but themselves.
The Democrat party just wanted another reliable voting bloc. What better way to get one than to buy it with taxpayer money?
Funny picture. Lil 0 on his unicorn heading to the ice cream parlor.
Ping.

Why doesn’t the naacp control their own kind?
LOL.
This is why they want to control the right of lawful people to own guns.
The tidal wave is mounting. Obama has inspired the envious, hateful, and vicious to come of their lairs and act out their desires.
The police cannot protect us.
They investigate crimes like this after they occur but are not equipped, staffed or charged with the responsibility to stop them from happening.
If you have a gun it is time to keep it locked, loaded and near at hand.
If you don’t have a gun, buy one, if you can still find one for sale.
Yes, that's why they did it.
Dear Mr. Lawson,
Some 70% or murderers have criminal records, as do 60% of their victims. I’d be willing to bet that these stats are even higher in Harrisburg. Perhaps you should try midnight basketball! After all, the taxpaying citizens of this country have already given up enough of their rights, supporting those who breed far more than they work.
Perhaps the NAACP ought to coach their own constituents about “Don’t Snitch” blow-back.
Time to hardsite the homestead?
Time to give Harrisburg the heave-ho.
That’s a racist comment, IMO.
You should ask the mod to delete it, IMO.
Why provide our enemies ammunition?
Well, Duh, why doesn’t the NAACP handle the matter themselves? Get a bunch of ‘em together, knock on doors, ask the residents about conditions and what changes they’d like to see. And then the NAACP can hope they make it out alive.
Change and Hope, what it’s all about now days.
Front street has always been a mess.
that and the persistent errant behavior by some groups
why is it racist to call a black city “chocolate”?
they themselves do it constantly...we're the chocolate this and that....like it's a pride thing. I think there is almost no racism on this forum.
racism is about racial supremacy, humor about minorities is not by default racism
as a white male I am sure open to all the taunts and jeers and digs, well then by damn they can take it too...might do them some good
that is real equal treatment
I don't mean to be picking on you...I know you have been here a while but calling a black town a chocolate city is not racist ...it's a a joke and most famously popularized by Ray Nagin.
but I will confess, handwringing over racism is not my primary prism of view...I'm about sick of the claim, it has excused the destruction of my culture, my way of life , my traditions and all I hold dear. It elected this fool we have a president.
Worrying abou racial redress has emasculated America and changed us forever for the worse. That even many conservatives hand wring over every slight or pander to any "conservative leader" of color is not encouraging.
I didn’t hit the abuse button because of the seniority of the poster on this forum.
What percentage of Harrisburg, PA is black?
Washington DC has a black majority, but nobody refers to it as a ‘chocolate city’...far as I am aware.
IMO, FreeRepublic...being #3 political forum on the planet needs to hold itself to a higher standard. Why give ammunition to our opposition?
Just saying.....
Harrisburg is 55% black.
I think that qualifies to some degree.
I can’t help it if blacks in Washington DC don’t have a sense of humor like NOLA blacks or most freepers
ROFLMAO
1. Whine and cry about racial profiling and discrimination when the law is enforced against law breakers
2. Scream discrimination when lawbreakers are tried and convicted
3. Weaken the police and legal system, prosecute those who enforce the law
4. Lawlessness breaks out
5. Scream discrimination for the absence of law enforcement
HA, HA
Build a wall around the damn place, throw more guns in.
Come back and see how things are going
If more than one left standing, throw in more guns and bullets
Not worth saving.
You're [being] unreasonable, Stanley.
C'mon now, how much more can one Darwin do?
The word chocolate was in quotes, and appeared to me to be a joke referencing Nagin’s own words.
If that is racist, then we are all in trouble.
Diversity is our strength.
Here is one example:
>>”We’re beyond what the Harrisburg police department can do. We need help,” Lawson said. <<
Yes, and that help is available at your local gun store you liberal idiot.
I don’t use that term (idiot) lightly. These people are beyond what I can take these days.
Cap and trade did me in. It is when this “Dagney Taggert” understood that John Galt was right all along. It leaves me with little patience for the ramblings of adult children like this guy.
“Washington DC has a black majority, but nobody refers to it as a chocolate city...far as I am aware.”
They used to. “Chocolate City and its Vanilla Suburbs” was the way they put it.
