Palin Wins Kansas Presidential Straw Poll
Kansas City Star ^ | June 28, 2009 | Steve Kraske

President -- 2012

Sarah Palin: 76

Mike Huckabee: 54

Mitt Romney: 52

Bobby Jindal: 19

Ron Paul: 9

In a straw poll at the Olathe Republican Party's annual Picnic and Straw Poll Saturday at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop, Todd Tiahrt grabbed a big win in a straw poll faceoff.

Tiahrt and Moran, both members of Congress, are squaring off in the GOP primary next year for the U.S. Senate.

Saturday's results:

Tiahrt: 165 votes.

Moran: 46.

The 3rd District, which encompasses the site of the poll, is a major battleground in the primary race given that Moran hails from Hays and Tiahrt from Wichita.

Organizers also staged a 3rd District Congress straw poll for the right, presumably, to take on Democratic incumbent Dennis Moore next year.

Those results:

Patricia Lightner: 74.

Macie Houston: 33

Daniel Gilyeat: 30

Darla Jaye: (write-in): 24.

For governor:

Sam Brownback: 197

Other: 12.

Secretary of State:

Kris Kobach: 192

JR Claeys: 22

Gad, I can’t believe Huckabee came in second

Huckabee won the 2008 GOP Kansas Caucus defeating McCain so it’s not to be unexpected, imo.

Mike Huckabee.... 59.58%
John McCain. ..... 23.50%

counterpunch is still whining over at the “High Noon” thread. He’s hell-bent on getting the last word in there despite all the derision and ridicule he’s brought down on himself there because of his non-sense.

Which makes it the more impressive that the votes went to Sarah rather than to Huck this week!

The question becomes does that translate into votes on election day? I'm not that impressed by any straw poll today or even one two months prior to the election. Name recognition, attendees, etc determine straw poll winners and do not necessarily represent the voting populace come election day. Lots of water to flow under the bridge before a choice will be made.

LOL! I think that second one might still be going! :)

Oh how they pine for Sarah to return to fulltime caribou skinning in the tundra, and leave the GOP to the new Breck Girl, Mittzie.

Would be nice if she ran as an Conservative, and ignored the GOP. The GOP needs to be terminated.

I think Bill Clinton’s praise for Sarah has dems scared. Bill is to them, after all, a political god. If he can spot genuine intellect and political savvy in Sarah, the dems are screwed.

Then start thinking NOW of Iowa and New Hampshire.

Yep that is for sure. Ma Palin has somewhat of an advantage in that she was McCain’s VP pick. But she will still have to put in the time in those first states if she chooses to get into the race. I think I read somewhere that McCain spent many weekends of the year prior to the NH primary in that state visting one on one with the voters. That is what it takes apparently to win up there.

I don’t believe he got any. It was a straw poll. You pay two bucks and you got a chance to vote. I don’t recall him being on the ballot.
