Vehicle fees, other laws to take effect Wednesday in Colorado

Coloradans whose license plates expire in July will have to pay new fees to get their plates renewed starting Wednesday.

The size of the fees varies by the weight of the vehicle... Late fines are going up, too, and there will be a $2 daily fee on rental cars.

The fees come from Senate Bill 108, the first new funding source for Colorado highways since the last time the gas tax increased nearly two decades ago. Democrats led by Gov. Bill Ritter pushed for the law, which should raise $200 million to $250 million a year to repair roads and bridges. Republicans uniformly opposed it because of the fee increase.

A few other fees are going up Wednesday, too, because of laws that take effect July 1.

SB 247 loosens the requirements to qualify for unemployment insurance. By making more people eligible, Colorado can get more unemployment money from the federal stimulus bill.

Very little of these new fees will actually make it to roads and bridges .

No but when the media run another story/photo op about schoolkids coming up with a lawnmower that burns algae (but only runs for 3 minutes) you can feel a sense of pride that your taxes have contributed to another boondoggle.

Thanks to the wisdom of our beloved Governor (a *very* close friend of Hussein Himself) and our legislature our sales tax in Massachusetts will be going up by 25%.*Mike Dukakis* didn't even do that.

But we're not fearful because 80% of us Gay Staters live within easy driving distance of sales-tax-free New Hampshire. And there's the internet too.

The decline of CO continues. CO used to be relatively business friendly, but that was nearly a decade ago. My former home state is turning into another CA. And I saw it coming, which is the main reason I left.

Another case of democrat revenge on republicans and independents. They want to jack up the electric charges also. We could have a healthy state but the demorats are run by sierra club and other radicals. Sierra club sued the forest service to stop logging a forest that had been blown down by a micro-burst. Now that dead wood has created billions of pine beetles that are killing the rest of the trees in the state. Perfect job, rats!
