glad to see he is up to date on Honduras constitutional law

I'm curious, is it a document of negative rights?

Well, it is unsurprising. Like the ol’ adage goes, there hasn't yet existed a left-wing tyrant that the Democrats wouldn't support.

Impeached and removed from office by the constitutional authorities, in accordance to the constitution.

Makes guys like Chavez and Obama very nervous, as it should.

"President Obama on Monday declared that the United States still considers Manuel Zelaya to be the president of Honduras and assailed the coup that forced him into exile as "not legal," deepening the chasm between the Central American nation and much of the rest of the world."

Selective meddling....again.

I guess Obortion wants to show solidarity with the other dictators in the world in the hope they stand up for him if it comes down to a military coup against him in the future.

If the US House of Representatives impeached Obama and the Senate convicted him and he refused to leave the White House so that the military had to carry him off while he continued to shout “I won! I am being kidnapped” - then Hugo Chavez and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could denounce this state of affairs as an illegal coup and demand that the democratically elected President be restored. Then the UN would pass a resolution and Chavez would threaten to invade.

Interesting scenario.

The article said — President Obama on Monday declared that the United States still considers Manuel Zelaya to be the president of Honduras and assailed the coup that forced him into exile as “not legal,” deepening the chasm between the Central American nation and much of the rest of the world.

Ummm..., it appears to me that Zelaya was the one attempting a “coup” by trying to do something that he was not allowed to do under their law (which was go another term when he was not allowed another term). So, they got rid of the guy who was attempting the coup.

Getting rid of a guy who is attempting a coup — is not the coup “itself”... LOL...

All coups are by definition “illegal”.

But the winner of the coup gets to draft new laws, a new constitution, and so on - so overthrowing the new regime would be illegal from their perspective.

As an aside, Obama should keep in mind that he has not proven that his Constitutionally able to be U.S. President. Something about a missing birth certificate...

I am going to pose this question to a ethics class i am currently taking. They all love obama. This ought to go over real good. And I Quote;

Good Ethical Questions take a little setup so here goes.
We should all be aware of what has been happening in Iran this last week or 2. Dozens if not hundreds of people have been killed in the streets fighting what can only be described as an oppressive police state run by a theocracy. When asked to comment on the events this week, the president of the united states said “we don’t know
how it is all going to turn out” This is a example of utilitarianism ethics. The definition of the decision making process for this brand of ethics is “When you’re attempting to decide what’s right or wrong, consequentialist (Utilitarianism) theories focus attention on the results or the consequences of the decision or action.” So it's “Let’s see what happens before we decide what is right or wrong”. This is “an end justifies the means” argument and that is full of danger because there can be no wrong if the end turns out the way you wanted. He also said he does not want to be seen as “Meddling in the affairs of another country. Yet 6 days later when the supreme court of Honduras sentenced their President for violations of their Constitution and contempt of court and the punishment was removal from office all perfectly legal under their constitution, now the president of the united states gets on T.V. and says that the president of Hondours should be put back into office, I thought he didn't’t want to meddle. There are currently only 4 world leaders calling for Zeleya to be put back into office. Raul Castro in Cuba Hugo Chavez in Venesula Daniel Ortega in wherever the hell he is, and Barrack Obama. Here is my ethical question. If the Iranian election was out and out fraud, which it looks like it was, and Honduras was following their constitution, which it looks like they were, How can anybody in this room support a leader who won’t support those people who are fighting for their freedom and yet in the same week calls for the reinstatement of a man who was lawfully convicted and removed from office? Are you for the rule of law or just blindly following your guy because he is your guy and you don’t know how this is all going to turn out so you don’t have to decide what is right or wrong yet?

>>President Obama on Monday declared that the United States still considers Manuel Zelaya to be the president of Honduras and assailed the coup that forced him into exile as "not legal," ...<<

From Mary Anastasia O’Grady, Wall Street Journal Editor of the Americas:

That Mr. Zelaya acted as if he were above the law, there is no doubt. While Honduran law allows for a constitutional rewrite, the power to open that door does not lie with the president. A constituent assembly can only be called through a national referendum approved by its Congress.

But Mr. Zelaya declared the vote on his own and had Mr. Chávez ship him the necessary ballots from Venezuela. The Supreme Court ruled his referendum unconstitutional, and it instructed the military not to carry out the logistics of the vote as it normally would do.

The top military commander, Gen. Romeo Vásquez Velásquez, told the president that he would have to comply. Mr. Zelaya promptly fired him. The Supreme Court ordered him reinstated. Mr. Zelaya refused.

Calculating that some critical mass of Hondurans would take his side, the president decided he would run the referendum himself. So on Thursday he led a mob that broke into the military installation where the ballots from Venezuela were being stored and then had his supporters distribute them in defiance of the Supreme Court's order.

The attorney general had already made clear that the referendum was illegal, and he further announced that he would prosecute anyone involved in carrying it out. Yesterday, Mr. Zelaya was arrested by the military and is now in exile in Costa Rica.

Barry, your understanding of legality and constitutionality is completely backasswords.

The Supreme Court and the Attorney General acting in accord with their constitution does not constitute a "coup", and in fact are the very definition of legal.

What an embarrassment to have this incompetent poseur speaking on behalf of America.

I’m stunned that Zero would loudly and repeatedly state a position that is so very, very far from center. This is amazing!

Millions of Americans stopped cold when they heard the Honduras action had been done under constitutional guidelines. That changed everything. Instead of just another Caribbean coup, this became a legal question and, better yet, a teachable moment for the rising pro-constitution movement in America. This was how a constitution in peril was supposed to work!

But instead we have Hillary and Zero loudly opposed? Joined by Castro, Chavez and Ortega, the Red Stars of South America? Speaking against an action taken under constitutional authority? This is priceless!

Either this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen Zero do, or its the last warning we get before our own constitution is openly opposed.

He’s exposing his hand here folks, for everyone to see. It is very odd that he would do so, unless he feels somewhat invincible. Major Garrett called him on Iran, now he totally ignores the Honduran Constitution and sides with Chavez and Castro. He is telegraphing to everyone that he does not support a country’s constitution (Honduras) and will allow sham elections to be portrayed as legitimate (Iran). He knows we know that we can extrapolate that he might try the same thing here, and he doesn’t care. My guess is he is very close to achieving a goal that will allow him to do so, and thinks we can’t do anything about it.

There is the matter of the approx 200 million in US aide that Honduras receives every year. If Obama doesn’t recognise the current government, would this be cut off?
