COLUMBIA, S.C. -- COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford declared his Argentine mistress his soul mate Tuesday but said he is committed to reconciling with his wife in hopes of saving his family and what is left of his political career.
Sanford, who also admitted meeting his lover more times than he had previously claimed, told The Associated Press in emotional interviews that he "crossed lines" with a handful of other women during 20 years of marriage.
But he said he never went as far as he did with Maria Belen Chapur, the woman at the center of the scandal that has derailed his once-promising political future.

One of many reasons he should be instantly jettisoned by Republicans at all levels. I’m appalled that the Republican leaders in the SC legislature didn’t make it clear to him several days ago that he had 24 hours to announce his resignation or they’d start impeachment proceedings and be completely ruthless with those proceedings.

I’m not sure about a “spiritual adviser” but I have heard of breaking it off in person with a witness there, sometimes even the spouse. In his case, the thought may have been to do it in a way where she was shown “respect” (okay, don’t puke, stay with me) so as not to make her feel slighted and cause him damage professionally or hurt his family in a public way in the future. Still, it’s really all about him and trying to protect him.

as you know I'm all for insulting any race or religion or ethnic group but if we made such comments about "Oriental, Negroid, Latino or Jewish)" folks many would construe that as bigotry

I'm sure she will be, and if there's anyone who really wants him to stay alive (like his wife, for the sake of their sons) they should probably put him under close suicide watch. He's obviously completely mentally unstable at this point, and when he realizes that his "soulmate" was just another thrillseeker and that his political career is utterly over, he'll really be at risk of doing himself in. Personally I think he belongs in a secure psych ward right now, under heavy medication.

She probably wasn’t surprised about the affair, but I expect she was pretty surprised by the AWOL thing.
No doubt, he will have a dramatic let-down when this all unwinds. Imagine losing his wife, kids, future, and present for a hump with a hottie. I would be unstable if I realized I screwed up this bad over tail...

I am appalled by the fact that you don’t see this man is an unstable flake.
You do know he went missing for a week and no one could find him? This isn’t about some idiot having an affair. There is serious reason to believe that he met up with his “soulmate” using taxpayer dollars on at least one other trip.
This isn’t funny or amusing or acceptable. I am sick of these loser politicians who abuse taxpayer money and think they can stick their boney fingers in our eyes repeatedly.
Enough already....and he did have sex with that woman and probably others.
My point is that if they are living separately, he can call his “soulmate” any time he wants to. There’s no need for him to do so via interviews with the press.
I see that you agree with me that he’s probably trying to get his wife to file for divorce. I don’t know how anyone can think otherwise. This is classic passive-aggressive behavior. The only thing different about this particular incident is that it usually isn’t done in public for everyone to see.
Most likely, he's being watched like a hawk and, after saying he wants to reconcile he'd be called out on it if he tried to contact her. He's trying to blame the ultimate decision to divorce on his wife, yet keep maria waiting in the wings. He doesn't know what's going to happen. They may both dump him. He wants to make sure one of them is there for him in the end. He's probably in for a big surprise there. He's a politician. He plays the fence.
Who would have thought when we started going after him that it would turn into this? Why would his wife even want the scumbag?
That’s what I think as well — if she still wants him then they deserve each other and then they can wonder if they are the one or if someone else is going to come along.
My whole deal from day one if you are Governor of a state, you just don’t up and leave and not let anyone where you went. No way did I expect this to happen and for him to keep yapping about his now ‘soul mate’ — enoughy is enough. He needs to resign and if wants to go live with his ‘soul mate’ then let his wife get a fast divorce and agree to her demands.
I wouldn’t want this lowlife ever in my home again if I were her.
