Washington, DC -- President Barack Obama has named Douglas Kmiec, the Pepperdine University law professor who has become a key impediment to pro-life Catholics as the ambassador to Malta. The move is sure to spark opposition in Catholic circles given Malta's strongly pro-life stance.

Malta is a very scenic, historic place with excellent seafood. They threw rrrod out of the country with Extreme Prejudice!

Got me! But in fairness, I’ve been waiting months to use that quote.

I could care less about what happens to Kmiec.

What I AM concerned about is Obama's attempts to split the Catholic Church along conservative versus liberal lines and present the liberal lines to the rest of the world as the face of the Catholic Church in America.

This is a very cynical and overt attempt to justify and draw liberal Catholics to his causes and to try to marginalize conservative Catholics.

He was denied communion last year during a meeting of Catholic business leaders because of his endorsement and repeated campaigning for Obama.

If true, perhaps the archbishop of Malta could be made aware of this.

I don’t guess I know who rrrod is but have always been intrigued by Malta. After all it got some good press from none other than St. Paul.

Malta used to be an intensely Catholic country. Canon law was essentially the law of the land.

I'm sure it has suffered at the hands of liberalism and relativism like everywhere else but there's a chance Doug may receive some religious and cultural schooling in this country, which could, if taken the right way, point him on the road to salvation.

The Pope should allow NO photographs with Obama.

The Pope should allow NO photographs with Obama.

Alternatively, the Pope holds the crozier; whereas Obama holds the pitchfork.

It’s suffered a lot less than most European countries, and is probably the most resolutely anti-abortion of all of them.

This was done as a slap in the face to Malta and to the Catholic Church in general. Bambi never misses a chance to take his revenge, and of course, he has many an eager Judas willing to help him.

Well, Kmiec will be on THEIR home ground. It may be very uncomfortable for him.

Rrrod is a FReeper with a very colorful past, which includes being invited to leave Malta and never come back.

Malta is featured regularly in “Archaeology” magazine and travel publications: lots of cool stuff there! I’d love to see it.

This sounds better than it is.

Malta is anti abortion and piously Catholic. Kmeic might now have to put up with living with Catholics who are actually Christian Catholics.

And living on a tropical island has a lot of bad points: You are isolated from the smart set, for example, and your choice of who to visit is limited unless of course he can afford to fly over to the Rivera for lunch.

How’s your Marine recruit doing? Any word? We’ve had a postcard and a note from Anoreth; I guess she gets a few minutes to write on Sunday. She didn’t mention going to church, but I assume she did!

I believe that Malta is still a strongly Christian (Catholic to be precise) nation.I guess the UK isn’t the *only* European nation for which Hussein has utter contempt.

We've had a postcard, but he is never much of a correspondent even at the best of times.

We sent him to sleepaway camp with pre-addressed, stamped envelopes with a sheet of paper inside -- and got ONE letter the entire summer! (and doubtless that was the evening when a letter home was your meal ticket for supper!)

And he's much busier and more tired than he ever was at summer camp.

Imho, A Man for All Seasons is one of the very best movies ever made, and your comparison is most apt.
