Boehner Reaches Into Bag of Tricks to Disrupt Democrats
New York Times ^ | July 4, 2009 | Carl Hulse

Posted on 07/04/2009 5:47:19 PM PDT by reaganaut1

Representative John A. Boehner came to Washington in 1991 as a rabble-rousing Republican willing to disrupt the House to score points against powerful Democrats. Now, as the House Republican leader in a town again dominated by Democrats, the Ohioan is back to his old tricks.

Trying to build opposition to a climate change measure being considered as the Fourth of July recess loomed, Mr. Boehner commandeered the floor for an hour to mount an unofficial filibuster and ridicule the legislation. He has sanctioned efforts by rank-and-file Republicans to tie up the House with dozens of procedural votes. During the debate on the economic stimulus, he threw the huge bill to the floor with a theatrical thump.

“There are times when the majority just does such outrageous things that you have to find a way to make your point to the American people,” said Mr. Boehner, who began his House career as one of the so-called Gang of Seven, a group of Republican upstarts that confronted Democrats over the House banking scandal and other institutional abuses.

Mr. Boehner has various motivations for using whatever means are at his disposal to make a political case. Republicans portray the climate measure as a flawed threat to the economy. Given the fact that his party is almost totally powerless, a little stagecraft can be the only way to get attention. Then there is the issue of bolstering morale among his beleaguered House colleagues, who said they were energized by Mr. Boehner’s performance against the energy bill.

“Our side has been waiting for somebody to swing back,” said Representative Tom Cole, Republican of Oklahoma, who predicted Mr. Boehner’s efforts would elevate him in national Republican circles.

But Democrats say Mr. Boehner’s tactics smack of desperation.

Go, John! I wonder if Republicans need a charismatic candidate like Palin for president in 2012. After 4 years of the destructive socialist Obama, Boehner ought to look good by comparison, and he ought to tilt Ohio.

No. He is a good man and has been one of the few Repubs sticking it to the Dems recently. Except for 1 vote, he has had a stellar career.

How in the sam hill do you expect to get good folks to run if you berate the good guys? Save your verbal fire for people who truly deserve it. Boehner is not one of those people.

So the article portrays Boehner as an arch conservative, partisian fighter. I wish the real Boehner would act like the guy in the article.

Amen. Boehner has been a stalwart for conservatism in the House. Sometimes I wonder if some of the people on here are actually paying attention to what’s going on.

Boehner should not have stopped after an hour. He should have read EVERY PAGE of the Death to America Bill, AND the amendments, aloud, slowly. Let C-SPAN broadcast every minute, day after day, as he reads.

He should do this with EVERY bill the Democrats try to ram through. The Death to America II bill is coming (”Health Care”).

John Boehner: READ EVERY WORD OF THESE DEATH TO AMERICA BILLS ON C-SPAN.

The New York Times and Carl Hulse, a more biased crew you would be challenged to find. You stupid people do not understand that you are commanded to submit to your intellectual superiors. Carl Hulse, a genius of climate science, has so decreed. Dissent is not allowed. This is the way that things are to be in Obama Land. And, don’t you dare to quit sending your tribute to the almighty ones.

Well said. The Democrats support each other no matter what, they shield their criminals and cover for each others scandals.

On the other end of the spectrum, Republicans find it nearly impossible to find someone who measures up and they think it's noble to tear them apart.

Our side will get a lot more vocal and fight a lot harder for us if we encourage them and commend them when they do the right thing without bringing up a negative to balance things out.

IMHO

Grow up. You are never going to have a perfect politician. Never. Boehner is not a Boner. Your language is that of a pre-pubescent boy who thinks he’s bad stuff in the schoolyard.

In reality, Boehner has a strong conservative voting record and has done a stellar job for the vast majority of his career. He is a solid conservative, and those who are willing to throw folks like him to the wolves deserve whatever they get. You want perfection? You aint’ gonna get it until Christ rules, so take the best you can get and when you have a solid conservative like Boehner rejoice in it.

You write a check for $5,000 to buy a 9 cent stamp, on an account that has $1.00 in it, and take the remainder in cash and that is an INSTITUTIONAL ABUSE?!

Boehner has been pretty good since “the vote”, but I still have a hard time forgiving anybody who voted put us on this road to fascialism. GOP congressional “leaders” still in my doghouse include Boehner, Cantor and Ryan. Boehner seems most likely to redeem himself. I don’t trust the other two as far as I can throw ‘em.

I think there are a lot of GOP members of both the House and Senate who wish they could have their vote back on the bail-out bill.

In the past, I was understanding of the occasional bad vote that a member of Congress made. In the last 10 years, I’ve become a little less understanding - especially when it comes to votes as important as the bail out bill.

OTOH, a lot of GOP members of Congress were strong-armed, scared, cajoled and conned into voting for the bill with dire threats that the entire economy was gonna collapse from top to bottom if the bail-out bill didn’t pass.

Yet congressional reporter Carl Hulse made excuses for House Speaker Pelosi, who accused the CIA of deliberately misleading her in 2002 about waterboarding.

Hulse glossed over the multiple contradictory accounts Pelosi has delivered of what she knew about waterboarding and when she knew it. He also insisted Pelosi was in no political danger and focused solely on the politics of the battle and the effectiveness of Republican attacks, not on the veracity of Pelosi’s accounts of what the C.I.A. told her about waterboarding.

I know that unless you actively looked for the opposition (Republican) response to floor legislation and debate, some of the good stuff tends to go unnoticed. But I think you are a bit off the mark. Boehner calls them as they are in the house, but it is like the tree falling in the woods analogy.

It is easy to sit back and take shots from afar, but I have heard several House Republicans on a daily basis speak to the government largess to which you are alluding. Give credit where credit is due.

Carl Hulse Hates GOP’s Successful Demonization of the “Death Tax”

Congressional reporter Carl Hulse insisted that the “death tax” (always in quotes) “hits merely a sliver of wealthy American families” and was dismayed at how successful the conservative campaign against it has been.

“If that Republican-backed plan is approved, it could deprive Mr. Obama of about $100 billion for his initiatives on health care, energy and education when alternative sources of revenue are already dwindling. That prospect is plain outrageous to top Democrats, who see efforts to spare the wealthy as particularly ill-timed given the economic pain being experienced by many of lesser means.”

He chased Jim McDermott all the way thru the legal system, finally forcing him to pay a fine.

It took years but he got Snake McDermott.

Boehner has not been great, but he has had his moments. As with this 'climate bill' Pile of Sh*t. He's finding his voice to oppose the Marxist and his henchmench in Congress as they get ever more foolhardy with their economy busting legislation. He's the minority leader right now and we need him to fight these bastards. When he does good, we should applaud that. IMO, writing him off as a joke is surrender in the midst of the battle.

My rep in congress, Peter Roscham(R-IL), had a town hall meeting Friday that I attended.

He’s on the same page as most of us.

1 thing for sure, everybody must realize this, elections have consequences, sorry about this JRob but if Romney is the GOP candidate I’m going to vote for him, the alternative is always WORSE!!!

I will take a republican LITE, a RINO or whatever before I will accept the most conservative dim.

Not voting for the GOP candidate will always be counted as a vote for the dim lib and that will always be WORSE!

Sorry, as much as I wasn’t happy with McCain there is a world of difference between him and Obama and what Obama is giving us, it’s sick.

This last election has more long term consequences that will last generations, not just the lenght of Obama’s term.

Nothing? I gave $200 to Michele Bachmann in the 2008 election cycle. I contributed to Virgil Goode, too. Oh, and I'm a monthly donor here on FR. Are you?

Do you help with supporting CONSERVATIVES in your District?

My home district is over one hundred miles away from my present location, and it's a bit of a challenge to juggle the responsibilities of a full-time college student in a public Ivy's Engineering School and what you are suggesting.

your lack of ability to think has shown you do nothing but whine about one item or one issue.

If I am "whining," then so are all the Freepers who are complaining about the eight Republicans who voted yes to Waxman-Markey, especially if they have not otherwise voted egregiously in other areas.

Thanks for giving us OBAMA.

I didn't give you Obama.

The folks who voted for Obama--and I am not one of them--did.

People who are stuck on one issue and find everything wrong with their elected officials....are guilty. How many times have I ran into ONE issue people? The numbers are astronomical.

I've got news for you; keep on whining about Boehner while the Marxist are now in control of the Executive and Legislative with a Filibuster proof Senate. Then we have a split court depending on one Justice who makes decisions on a whim.

Oh yeah keep on complaining about one issue or one vote. As for what you gave, call and ask them for your money back. Sit home and wait for Obama’s Youth to keep an eye on every move the American people make.

I'm fed up with people such as yourself. As for donations I give thousands yearly to different Conservatives groups - Heritage Foundation, CPAC, and others... so go lay your guilt on someone else Bubba.
