This is kinda like Florida v. Florida State. Too bad they both can’t lose.

Looks like the Uyghurs of Chinese Occupied East Turkestan are getting restive. I figured the riots would start in Kashgar with the old city being “redeveloped”.

Dumb question, but I haven’t followed the Uighur situation, of late. What was the tipping point this time?

wow - I thought the “city on fire” was a bit of an exaggeration until I saw that last photo.

That photo of people standing around and others lying on the ground (dead?) is very strange. (15th from the bottom)

Due to advances in technology, Chinese gov’t like Iranian, can’t hide what goes on there anymore.

Is there an ethnic disparity between the cops and the protestors - are the former mostly Han and the latter Uyghurs, Hui etc?

That last photo -- of the high-rises on fire from the top down -- are really scary. Those appear to be residence blocks (apartments). Why would folks torch their own homes?

Simultaneous fires atop three high-rises takes quite a bit of coordination. Air-drops? Are we seeing government retaliation against the populace?

The Chinese are dealing with a restless Caucasian (Turkic) minority. The rest of the world will avert its eyes, since Caucasians are fair game.

Paper no. 3293
06-July-2009

“Widespread Violence in Urumqi”
By B. Raman

SNIPPET: “2. Over 1000 Muslims (some estimates put the number at 3000) came out into the streets in different parts of the city and attacked the security forces, Han passers-by and shops owned by Hans.”

SNIPPET: “6. There has been a recrudescence of jihadi violence in Uzbekistan, Kyrgystan and the Xinjiang provice of China since the beginning of this year. While local grievances of the Uighurs are believed to be responsible for the fresh wave of unrest in Xinjiang, the revival of pro-Taliban activities in Uzbekistan and Kyrgystan has come in the wake of attempts by the US to find alternate routes for the movement of logistic supplies to their troops in Afghanistan through Russia and the Central Asian Republics. Following frequent attacks by the Pakistani Taliban on convoys carrying logistic supplies passing through the Pashtun areas, the US has embarked on an exercise to find alternate routes.

7. Reliable sources say that Al Qaeda has been encouraging the Uzbeks, the Uighurs and the Chechens to unite to foil this US exercise and to target the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s joint operations against terrorism.”
