CALIFORNIA BUDGET CRISIS UPDATE (a liberal perspective)
New West Notes ^ | 07-06-2009 | Bill Bradley

Posted on 07/06/2009 7:16:53 PM PDT by Amerigomag

Here’s the latest on California’s chronic-turned-chaotic budget crisis. Not much to report. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger held an event this morning with some country district attorneys promoting his idea to crack down on potential fraud in the now massive, and heavily unionized, in-home health service program. He says it can save hundreds of millions, public employee unions and Democrats say no, with legislative leaders saying they’re open to some reforms, but after the budget. Not unlike a previous pledge by another set of Democratic legislative leaders to get change the redistricting system.

Assembly Speaker Karen Bass boycotted this morning’s Big 5 gathering of Schwarzenegger and legislative leaders, complaining that he is jamming the process with new items. Bass had said, according to former Assembly Speaker Willie Brown, that she wouldn’t push for new taxes in the guise of fees, but did just that. Only to see it, predictably, fail once again.

I think people have a process to go through to get where this is going. Will Schwarzenegger get these other things he wants? Maybe a few. Will the public employee unions — whose TV ad campaign against the special election package was on the basis that its state spending limit, which they oppose in all circumstances, was too weak — get another round of tax increases to stave off massive cuts? No. Will President Obama save the day for the way things are by stepping in with a big federal bailout for the state government? Don’t bet on it.

Apparently, even liberals are beginning to feel the heat generated at tea parties.

The problem in CA is the 2/3 vote requirement to raise taxes, which the repubs use to block budgets. The problem won’t get better until either the 2/3 vote requirement or more repubs are gone. /s

Let the Ca. budget crisis crash and burn since the Legislative morons as puppets can’t/won’t make the necessary spending cuts. Its all a big circus with too many freaks and clowns.

The legislature, with the consent of the executive, has the authority to suspend Prop 98. A suspension of prop 98, even allowing 40% of the available revenue to be siphoned off to the NEA, would still save Californians approximately $25B*.

*The revised 2009-2010 budget currently in place authorises $97B in total spending with $53B directed to public education. Revenue is now predicted at $71B for 2009-2010. 40% would be $28B. A $25B savings.

"— get another round of tax increases to stave off massive cuts?"

And then what??? The politicians will suddenly come to their senses and begin living within their means??? Don't bet on it.

"Will President Obama save the day for the way things are by stepping in with a big federal bailout for the state government?"

And then what??? The politicians will suddenly come to their senses and begin living within their means??? Don't bet on it.

These politicians will continue to spend and raise taxes and call for a bailout--and spend, raise taxes, and call for a bailout--until the goose that lays the golden eggs is stone cold dead.

Failure to live within one's means--whether on a national level, a state level, or an individual level--inevitably leads to a fall!

"Apparently, even liberals are beginning to feel the heat..."

Don't count on it, Am.

"Those whom the gods intend to destroy they first make mad." And Leftists (who understandably prefer the Orwellian misnomer "Liberals") are stark raving mad! Expect destruction.

Note tagline.

The Fall of California is unimaginable to "Liberals". They are delusional and cannot think outside their delusional paradigm. They are even under the delusion that they are liberal.

It's unfortunate that Arnold Schwarznegger lacks the wit to see "Liberalism" for what it is.

It's unfortunate that Arnold Schwarznegger lacks the wit to see "Liberalism" for what it is.

The Austrian grew up in an environment stained by the consequences pf national socialism. His youth was spent living in its hangover.

You'd think he got the message. He professes understanding the consequences of national socialism but his actions are marked by an apparent unwillingness to forsake either. He is a nationalist, unwilling to challenge federal supremacy, even in a argument over minnows. He is a socialist, clinging to the preservation of our programs and a paradigm of a luxurious social safety net in the face limited resources.

California is proof positive that a super-majority of liberals can destroy anything — even a paradise on earth. Or I should say, especially a paradise on earth.

The left must show they did EVERYTHING they could do to stave off these mass layoffs and program cuts.

After a few more days that show will be over and they will concede defeat.

The GOP and the gov hold every card in the deck.

Cut the damn spending.

That's easy to say, but very hard to implement.
CA's problem is simply not enough producers and too many receivers.
Until a gubernatorial candidate starts talking about ending illegal immigration, re-certifying welfare recipients and start lowering taxes and regulations on businesses, then it's just more of the same.
I don't know why Duncan Hunter don't get in there and throw his hat in the race. He's uniquely qualified to be CA's Governor.
