Potential Alzheimer's, Parkinson's Cure Found In Century-old Drug
ScienceDaily ^ | Aug. 18, 2008

ScienceDaily (Aug. 18, 2008) — A new study conducted by researchers at Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland shows that a century-old drug, methylene blue, may be able to slow or even cure Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Used at a very low concentration – about the equivalent of a few raindrops in four Olympic-sized swimming pools of water – the drug slows cellular aging and enhances mitochondrial function, potentially allowing those with the diseases to live longer, healthier lives.

A paper on the methylene blue study, conducted by Hani Atamna, PhD, and a his team at Children's, was published in the March 2008 issue of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Journal. Dr. Atamna's research found that methylene blue can prevent or slow the decline of mitochondrial function, specifically an important enzyme called complex IV. Because mitochondria are the principal suppliers of energy to all animal and human cells, their healthy function is critical.

The actual paper is at http://www.fasebj.org/cgi/content/abstract/22/3/703

I know of several people who are trying this stuff, and reporting good results.

That’s great! I hate to say it, but there is so much money involved companies and organizations will probably try to cover it up.

a few raindrops in four Olympic-sized swimming pools of water

Are raindrops a different size than other water drops? And is this a homeopathic medicine?

If this works, the Embryonic Stem Cell people won't be happy.

It would be hard to cover something up that’s cheap and easily available.

You should find this stuff at your neighborhood aquarium store.

LOL! I have childhood memories of trying to cure ick in my Mollies and Swordtails with methylene blue.

Lost a lot of Mollies, IIRC ;-)

>>> Is this the same stuff I use in my fish tank to cure ick?

It is a coloring dye used to stain micro-organisms on laboratory slides.

Very poisonous.

Unless they mix it with extract of infant, I don’t think that Michael J. Fox will be interested.

Used in a somewhat higher concentration - say, a couple of milliliters in a jug of cheap wine - an imbiber will find themselves pissing Kelly green the next morning. This principle was applied at my fraternity house every October for the incoming freshmen to general hilarity.

Believe so.

I was working in a really crappy part of Africa, possibly got malaria (got sick, not sure what), and they used this to knock it out, along with some other drugs.

Turns your pee blue and the whites of your eyes blue.

I looked like an extra from “Dune.”

I don't know how they determine the dose for "people"?..

Isn’t methylene blue the dye we used to inject into the blood stream in cardiology research labs? I can’t remember for sure. (I would think I’ve got Alzheimers myself except that I’ve always been this way.)

Methylene Blue is cheap and easily available at aquarium stores.

One thing that’s still unknown is the exact dosage.
Various people suggest dosages of 60mcg & 1mg
(1 drop of the aquarium solution = 1mg)

It should to be taken 3 times a day.

My source says no... because it doesn’t show up on xray.

(my brother-in-law is visiting and is with me now.. he is an eye surgeon.)
