Seriously! People generally immediately know what you’re talking about, and get a chuckle out of it, and it implicitly makes fun of the whole “evil assault rifle / black rifle” nonsense.

Everyone around here is buying AR-15s like crazy.

Same here. And in these circumstances, it makes a lot of sense. In the "good ol' days", I would have recommended a Ruger 10-22 as a "first gun", with a Ruger Mark III as a "starter handgun". Once they mastered those, they'd have a better idea of what they'd want for a third weapon.

Now, in good conscience, I have to tell them to get an AR15 shorty, a good optical/electronic sight that will cost them about half the price of the rifle itself, a can of ammo, and about a dozen extra mags.

The AR15 is shooter-friendly, reasonably-to-remarkably accurate, and is very much a known quantity. If you've never held a rifle in your life prior to this, it's the one to start with. Once sighted in, the new optic/electronic sights provide the edge to engage quickly, and at longer ranges. The whole idea is to reach out further and faster than the other guy, with confidence that you'll score first. None of this is cheap, but we aren't plinking at milk jugs filled with water.

I think anything that shoots .308 Win/7.62 NATO is a better choice for patriot riflemen, in case you ever really need to reach out and touch someone.

Once you master your 5.56mm carbine, some people start thinking, "gee, it would be nice to reach out just a bit farther." Here are two of my "just a bit farther" rifles.

Actually, the M1 National Match is more of a family heirloom rather than a defensive tool. It was made in 1959 using the last of the newly-made receivers, and is from the block of highest-numbered serial numbers used by Springfield Armory. It has been unfired since it left the National Match workshop, and the action is a bit stiff yet.

Below it is a more down-and-dirty M1A SOCOM, tricked-out a bit from box stock. It's pleasant to shoot, and a lot of fun. More fun than I remember for the M14, which I shot in a half-day familiarization class while in AIT.

Morally anyone who would disarm me would essentially murder me. I would have no qualms.

“It’ll be a busybody social worker accompanied by the local sheriff/deputy whose kid plays in little league with your kid.

You gonna shoot ‘em?”

I agree with you that it will never be front door policies with those creeps but instead be backdoor policies as you stated. So, to answer your question, yes, I would shoot them. When the day comes that gun confiscations or people confiscations are happening it is time to go on the assault against whomever is doing the confiscating.

“4. High Violent Crime as the Depression really arrives” along with racial trouble being fomented by the guy who plays president on tv and Mexico becoming a basket case and news that guns and ammo are in short supply. The American people are not near as stupid as they think we are.

Sure, I've seen flocks of them coming out of the local gun stores. Just like the bats coming out from under the Congress Street Bridge in Austin(and various other structures in the area). Haven't you? :)

Once it looked like the store was on fire... Oh I forgot, it was. Burned to the ground, ammunition cooking off like popcorn. Quite a spectacle it was. But that was last fall, they are now reopened in a bigger nicer facility.

It won’t be that way. It’ll be a busybody social worker accompanied by the local sheriff/deputy whose kid plays in little league with your kid.

You gonna shoot ‘em?

Why should I tell them now, let them worry about it. If the deputy's kid plays with my kid, then my kid plays with his. Shouldn't that affect him/her, just as much as it might me. (Actually I've heard several deputies, going back to the original Ugly Gun Ban, say that if "they" want someone to go get citizens guns, "they" will have to find someone else. Those "overhearing" incidents span 10 year and several hundred miles. (All in Texas though, YMMV)

First of all, as the FR post portal saws “Loose lips sink ships”.

Second, the four reasons mentioned are similar to ones I have heard from many here. Often from those who never thought of such things before.

God help us.

“.458 SOCOM”

I bet it’s fun to shoot, but how’s the ammo outlook if things get rough ?

9MM is the standard handgun caliber for our military forces.

But only because some piss ant in the Carter administration declared it should be so, in the interests of "Commonality". Many in the military would have preferred a new .45, perhaps with an option for a 9mm in a smaller, more modern, package than the M9, something like the M11, for the GIs who squat to pee, or who need to conceal their firearm (CID, OSI, NCIS) and can use modern ammunition (I think?) . By now a.40 S&W would be better even for those categories.

9 mm would be OK if the military could use expanding ammunition. But they can't. So they tend to shoot through the bad guys, rather than take them down. As long as you can't use expanding ammo, you need a big bullet, even if that means it's slower.

For personal defense, with modern expanding ammunition, the 9 is fine. (Although I personaly only own .45s, I wouldn't mind a 9, in a very small and concealable package, like the KelTec P11 for example).

I like Sport Utility Rifle.

DPMS has a line of AR type rifles that they call the Sporticle. I guess to indicate a blend of sporting and tacticle uses.

Nothing wrong with 9mm. I have a Glock 19 and a robust supply of 115 grain Speer Gold Dot personal defense ammo to go with it.

Range ammo is relatively cheap (and increasingly easy to find) which means I can afford to practice my defensive handgun skills. A lot.

I can't think of anyone who would care to be shot with the combo. Nope. No one comes to mind.

You might want to read The Zombie Survival Guide written by Max Brooks. Some of it is very good SHTF advice. I bought it for my son and we had so many great discussions about the advice in the book that I decided to read it. The book is definitely tongue-in-cheek, yet it has a lot of practical information. It is also a great book to get your kids to think critically with out them realizing it.

Thanks for the heads up....most certainly looking for anything related to the subject for general knowledge, but more so considering the times in which we find ourselves.
