NSA Building Massive Data Center in Utah
Schneier on Security ^

Posted on 07/10/2009 4:59:49 AM PDT by Gomez

They're expanding:

The years-in-the-making project, which may cost billions over time, got a $181 million start last week when President Obama signed a war spending bill in which Congress agreed to pay for primary construction, power access and security infrastructure. The enormous building, which will have a footprint about three times the size of the Utah State Capitol building, will be constructed on a 200-acre site near the Utah National Guard facility's runway.

Congressional records show that initial construction -- which may begin this year -- will include tens of millions in electrical work and utility construction, a $9.3 million vehicle inspection facility, and $6.8 million in perimeter security fencing. The budget also allots $6.5 million for the relocation of an existing access road, communications building and training area.

Officials familiar with the project say it may bring as many as 1,200 high-tech jobs....

It will also require at least 65 megawatts of power....

It will also require at least 65 megawatts of power -- about the same amount used by every home in Salt Lake City combined. A separate power substation will have to be built at Camp Williams to sustain that demand, said Col. Scott Olson, the Utah National Guard's legislative liaison.
Uh why don't they just use one Flux Capacitor? That puts out 1.21 gigawatts of power? And you can Time Travel at the same time!

About the same time, NSA officials, who have a long-standing relationship with Utah based on the state Guard's unique linguist units,
I bet they're cunning linguists too.

I luv my government, I luv the NSA. I luv the BATF. I luv the DEA, FBI and every alphabet agency too! (just in case you're listening guys, drop the dark sun glasses - very 1980's)

I don’t think anyone grasps the full implications of this “undertaking.”

This is a massive command and control center. Orwellian beyond belief. Like the beginning of “The Outer Limits.”

We control the vertical. We control the horizontal.

WE CONTROL.

Utah is home to Mormonism. And what do we all know about Mormonism? They send their young men and women to many corners of the world. Before they go on their missions, they are well trained in the languages of the targeted countries. Their young men and women are by and large squeaky clean, very easy to clear. So the Agency ends up with a pool of trained linguists who have no problems passing the rigid security clearance process. And Uncle Sam saves a boatload of cash by not having to send them to language school.

Another one being built in Texas.

I don’t think people have a clue how “1984” has already happened.

Correct on all points. I’ve worked with a lot of them in the industry, and believe me, there’s a lot of them. I’m a little uncomfortable with one particular religion gravitating towards this particular endeavor in such large numbers. Nothing nefarious at play, and I don’t mean to suggest there is. It just rubs me the wrong way.

Hey, how'd you get that?
That's a pic of my old neighborhood in Chicago.

Just kidding -- there's no Pigeons.
I killed them all in 1967 with my Benjamin-Sheridan 5mm cal pellet rifle.

I still have it and the scope is still zeroed ;-)

65 megawatts of power

As an experienced IT professional I can tell you this is going to be the mother of all data centers and will rival those operated by Google and other co-location operators.

They already have one as big: The Aerospace Data Facility at Buckley AFB, Colorado. Been there since the 60’s.
