Steering off course with stimulus money

No matter how you slice it, this is a case of bad governing. Earnest, hard-working teenagers who thought they had steady employment for the summer now have none; camps that have traditionally been positive outlets for youngsters and life-savers for working families during summer months have been closed or cut back; the city's recreation director, an able man with plenty of experience, faces perhaps the most challenging two months of his career.

All this because Paterson Mayor Jose "Joey" Torres and his administration used dollars targeted for use under the federal stimulus program not to create jobs but to create chaos.

As explained in staff writer Leslie Brody's front-page story Thursday, the mayor took money from the city's often-strapped recreation department and summer programs to divert it to fill budget holes elsewhere, with an aim toward using the stimulus money to make up the difference in recreation. The problem is that someone wasn't paying close enough attention. Someone at City Hall failed to realize that by using the stimulus money toward that end, and providing new jobs for some city youths, that it would deprive nearly 200 others of work they had been depending on, perhaps, to help pay for college.

That's because the stimulus money, some $2.4 million to Passaic County, and meant as a one-time fix to "preserve and create jobs," comes with strings attached. Namely, that in order to be eligible for summer employment, youths must come from low-income families or face other barriers such as learning difficulties.

This is a dumbed down version of the original article. Couldn’t find original. Amazing that it was even published. Of course they blame the Mayor not the ONE!

++++++++++++++++++

The stimulus money has more strings attached than an symphony orchestra. How in the world can the result be natually good for economic growth? How many more billions do we have to work through before this has played itself out...787...what a crime of epic proporations.

++++++++++++++++

Compare that with Mayor Ray Nagin’s crazy and irresponsible response to Katrina...do you suppose “they” blamed him and the governor...nope, straight to the top then...morons; bigots.

The 200 that lost their jobs were not told until they reported to work, or some who worked half a day and then told they had no job and would not be paid for their time. LOL
