Trust on Issues: Voters Trust GOP More than Democrats on Eight of 10 Key Issues (Rasmussen Poll)
Rasmussen Reports ^ | 7/10/2009 | Scott Rasmussen

Voters now trust Republicans more than Democrats on eight out of 10 key electoral issues, including, for the second straight month, the top issue of the economy. They've also narrowed the gap on the remaining two issues, the traditionally Democratic strong suits of health care and education.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that voters trust the GOP more on economic issues 46% to 41%, showing little change from the six-point lead the party held last month. This is just the second time in over two years of polling the GOP has held the advantage on economic issues. The parties were close on the issue in May, with the Democrats holding a one-point lead.

Voters not affiliated with either party trust Republicans more to handle the economy by a 46% to 32% margin.

Last week’s report of 9.5 percent unemployment, the highest since 1983, raised doubts about the economy and the president's handling of it. Consumer and investor confidence is now down to the lowest levels in three months. Just 39% now say President Obama is doing a good or an excellent job on the economy while 43% rate his performance as poor. Those are by far the weakest numbers yet for the president.

The president's approval ratings also have fallen to new lows in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll.

Most voters (52%) now trust Republicans more on the issue of taxes, also the highest level found in over two years. Only 36% trust Democrats more on taxes. A survey conducted at the end of June found that 39% of voters now expect their taxes to go up under Obama, the highest level of concern measured to date.

On national security, Republicans hold a 49% to 40% lead over Democrats. That’s down from a 15-point lead last month.

For the second straight month, voters put North Korea at the top of the list of biggest threats to U.S. national security.

Republicans hold a four-point lead on the issue of the War in Iraq, down from an eight-point advantage in June.

Even though American troops have now pulled out of all cities in Iraq and still are on schedule to be completely withdrawn by the end of 2011, 64% of U.S. voters do not believe the war in Iraq is over.

The GOP has a 40% to 34% lead on the issue of immigration and is ahead 46% to 39% on abortion.

Republicans also edge out Democrats on government ethics and corruption for the second straight month, 34% to 33%. In June, the GOP held a six-point advantage on the issue.

Also for the first time in over two years, Republicans lead Democrats on the issue of Social Security 42% to 37%. Democrats held a six-point lead on the issue last month, and the parties were tied in April.

Democrats have also seen their leads shrink on two of the party’s strong points, health care and education. The party holds a four-point lead on health care, down from 18 points in May. The Democrats’ advantage on the issue is the smallest found in over two years.

Voters are evenly divided when it comes to the health care reform plans being promoted by the president and Democrats in Congress.

On education, Democrats lead Republicans 41% to 38%, also the smallest margin in over two years. Democrats held a 15-point lead in May on the issue.

Fifty-four percent (54%) of all voters say the average congressional Democrat is more liberal than they are, while 36% believe the average Republican congressman is more conservative in comparison to themselves. Just 44% say their own representative in Congress is about the same as them ideologically.

Republican candidates lead Democrats for the second straight week in the latest edition of the Generic Congressional Ballot. Support for the GOP remains unchanged this week - at its highest level over the past year, but support for Democrats dropped one point to tie its lowest level in the same time period.

Well, this is overall good news. It is mostly a rejection of the poor performance of the party in power. The GOP as a whole is not doing anything to ‘win’ back support. I’ll take it though. I just hope this doesn’t solidify the inside the beltway party leadership’s terrible ideas. We need new blood and new leaders or this is a ship that is still sinking.

Imagine what the GOP could do if they had a conservative message to put out there!

Or any message for that matter.

Well, this is overall good news.

I'd say that this is good news only if the GOP is the party of conservatism. 8 years of GOP Executive and Congressional control have taught me that this is sadly, not the case.

What the GOP is is simply Democrat-lite, or a less liberal version of the Democratic party, but liberal nonetheless.

Most people are arrogant and ignorant, a sure recipe for disaster as the Obamanation of the left wing communist democrat party proves. And delusion is a hard obstacle for utopian secular humanists to overcome.
Nevertheless, they are without excuse as the Scriptures teach Romans 1 teaches;

19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Romans:
12That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

13Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.

14I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.

15So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

16For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

17For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

“The GOP has a 40% to 34% lead on the issue of immigration”

24% were correct by answering none of the above

This is not a reflection of the GOP doing a better job, just the DEM and the current administration doing such a POOR job. The GOP still is failing to carry a positive, conservative message to the voters, and to do anything to help the average American.

I don't trust the American people to have a clue on almost anything. The same poll could be just the opposite next week.

Perhaps what we need are not people who are first and foremost Republican or Democrat but someone of high moral character. Of course, this would require most of the people in this nation to find their moral compass. Immoral conservatives are just as bad, possibly worse than immoral liberals.

I will agree with this, but high moral character is not enough. We need someone with WISDOM -- the right policies.

It is entirely possible for someone to be a moral person, yet have the WRONG policies.

This means nothing. If this poll meant anything we wouldn’t have this idiot in the WH. Apparently all these people polled stay home on election day and only vote when called on the couch.

You are absolutely right. It would be far better to have a person you agree with in office. If they don't agree with you though at least if they are of high moral character they will hold to their convictions unless they are wrong. They won't be bought and they will be honest.

Enter Sarah Palin.

I agree. She’s acting like Reagan did as someone who solidified conservatives and those believing in limited government. This is BOUND to shake up the GOP as they need those same people to get anywhere....and they need to have it brought home HARD that unless they go to the right of where they have been, they won’t get them.

Exactly right. Here is what I have been saying for weeks the Repubs need to do.
1. Repeal the Porkulus and take the $700 billion and reform Health Care, including Medicare & Medicaid using a private co-op type system.
2. Pass a balanced budget amendment to stop the rampant deficit spending that is killing our dollar. This will stop all the talk from foreign powers about a world currency. If we don’t control spending, it will only be a matter of time before China divorces itself from buying our debt, and that will turn the current recession into the Great Depression II.
3. Focus all future stimulus on job creation by stimulating manufacturing inside this country again, not outsourcing. Do this by reducing regulation (no cap & tax), business taxes, and business costs (see health care above).
4. To facilitate business and job growth, focus government spending on infrastructure upgrade and not welfare. We need to improve power creation and transmission, roads, bridges, rail lines, harbors, dams, street layout, urban spawl and traffic congestion, etc. This is where a viable energy plan comes in. All this is necessary to improve business productivity that is required to improve profitability and compete against low cost 3rd world economies.

If Repubs would run on this, they would win handily.

For the record, I trust the republican party to do nothing other than lose, lay down, and get in bed with the enemy.
