The 'Cap And Tax' Dead End (Palin WaPo Op-Ed)
Washington Post ^ | Tuesday, July 14, 2009 | Sarah Palin

Posted on 07/13/2009 8:34:34 PM PDT by redk

There is no shortage of threats to our economy. America's unemployment rate recently hit its highest mark in more than 25 years and is expected to continue climbing. Worries are widespread that even when the economy finally rebounds, the recovery won't bring jobs. Our nation's debt is unsustainable, and the federal government's reach into the private sector is unprecedented.

Unfortunately, many in the national media would rather focus on the personality-driven political gossip of the day than on the gravity of these challenges. So, at risk of disappointing the chattering class, let me make clear what is foremost on my mind and where my focus will be:

I am deeply concerned about President Obama's cap-and-trade energy plan, and I believe it is an enormous threat to our economy. It would undermine our recovery over the short term and would inflict permanent damage.

She did the right thing. She can attack and raise money. Our side will need to probably raise $400 million in 2012 to run.

She and others need to push hard that cao & tax will be INFLATIONARY - Big time! Granny’s electric bill will go up and it will filter through the economy on every good and service.

This is the path that Reagan took while he was in the wilderness: op-eds, radio spots and speeches.

I expect Sarah to become involved in every area as well as well as been on TV a lot.

The writer, a Republican, is governor of Alaska.

I don't know if Palin penned this, or the Washington Post.

If it was Sarah, any speculation about her leaving the Republican party has been refuted.

Does she have the power/clout to clean up the republican party and make them worth voting for again?

Energy IS a winning issue if framed the correct way. Compare the vast amounts of cheap affordable energy via oil, natural gas and nuclear versus the high cost of “windmills and sunshine”. It’s so easy to paint liberal as idealistic hippies not connected with reality when you say their ideas of energy are “windmills and sunshine”.

Aha, Sarah is taking my advice, she has found a signature issue, leading the charge against Cap and Tax. She'll garner a lot of mainstream Republican support from the industries that are in line to be gored.

I can see Sarah being a professional fundraiser.

She could make like Ronaldus Maximus 1976-1980. A lot of support for Republican candidates, and leading the charge on a signature issue, as did Reagan on the Panama Canal Treaty.

Yup, and I'm glad to see it begin so quickly. I don't believe most Americans are interested in the economy-busting lunacy that the environmentalists and their stooges in the Democratic Party have in mind. Palin is smart to try to make herself the face of common sense on this issue. She also needs to speak publicly on this issue and others, early and often.

“We have an important choice to make. Do we want to control our energy supply and its environmental impact? Or, do we want to outsource it to China, Russia and Saudi Arabia? Make no mistake: President Obama’s plan will result in the latter.”

This is a very good point. Its the second weakest argument of Cap and Trade. Without agreements across the world, some countries will be better off, some will be worse off, and under Obama’s plan, the US will fall into the latter category. It’s a another transfer of wealth.

The weakest argument of course is that its not proven at all that global warming is man made.

Oh, I think she did pretty well with that during the campaign. But it’s great to see some print work coming from her, and it’s good to see she’s not timid about it. I’d like to see one of these columns from Sarah about once a month or so, as long as they remain thoughtful and well-written, like this one.

You make an interesting point. Sarah goes after the second most vulnerable point of cap-in-trade without challenging the premise of it in the first place.

She takes cap-and-trade apart without opening herself to the accusation of not attuned to global warming.

I think that argument will eventually come, but she may not be as prepared as she would like to be to make that argument now.

Curious that she completely avoided the main reason to opposes this abominable legislation; it’s based on a hoax. Not a good sign, in my opinion. You can’t implicitly concede a clear fallacy as fact, and then win an argument on how to approach a non-existent problem by talking about other issues.
