SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Seminole County family is happy to get a piece of its family history back, even if it's not the real thing. Two years ago, a Purple Heart awarded to Ray Cox was stolen during a burglary. Private Cox was killed in combat in 1950.
Monday, Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas presented his family with a replacement medal. Cox's sister, Dorothy Clawson, is grateful to have the medal, but wishes she could have Ray back.
"I would have liked to seen him grow up to be a man and see what he turned out to be. He was just taken away from all of us by the war," Clawson said.
The Purple Heart award was first established by General George Washington in 1782.
‘not the real thing’
A reissue IS the real thing even if not the original.
My thoughts exactly...nothing wrong with the re-issue. It’s not like they bought it off the internet
What kind of creep would steal a purple heart? It’s not like a stolen iPod or TV where you can sell it at a flea market.
You wouldn’t believe.
Rare civil war medals and unit coins can fetch hundreds or THOUSANDS of dollars.
Older, rarer items are insanely valuable.
Was your reissue also engraved with your name, rank, service number and branch of service on the back?
Thanks
John Kerry?

My first one was not engraved either. I received it in Viet Nam.
Now that IS creepy. .
Oh, okay because my PH has my name, rank, service number and branch of service engraved on the back. I didn’t receive my medal until I got back from Nam.
BTW, welcome home!
Semper Fi,
Kelly
Thanks
May God Bless us all.
It used to be illegal to sell them I suppose to keep theft down. My fathers girlfriend’s grandson stole my Purple Heart thinking it was made of Gold. He also stole some silver dollars that he put in gas machines as dollars while he ran away.
The same type who stole the California service member’s diary. Was it from WWII?
