President Is Getting Poor Grades On Economy As Optimism Erodes
IBD Editorials ^ | July 14, 2009 | RAGHAVAN MAYUR

Persistent job losses seem to be taking a toll on how Americans view President Obama's performance in handling of the economy and federal budget.

In a July IBD/TIPP Poll, a majority of respondents asked to grade the president's handling of the economy gave him a grade of C or below.

In the same poll, the IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism Index tumbled 4.5 points, or 8.9%, in July, down to 46.3 vs. 50.8 in June. Index readings above 50 indicate optimism, below 50 indicate pessimism.

The study indicates that 21% of respondents gave Obama a C for his handling of the economy, 16% gave him a D and 19% gave him an F. The president received an A grade from 13% of respondents; 30% gave him a B.

The public's perception of the president's management of the budget is even harsher, with just 33% giving him an A or B and 62% grading him average or below.

Most troubling to the president is the perception of self-identified independents, 62% of whom gave him a C or below for his handling of the economy, with 68% giving him average or poor grades for managing the budget.

whats to be confident about? Unemployment is nearing 10%, labor slack (unemployed + underemployed) imply a ~ 15%+ rate, benefits are being cut, work weeks are being shortened, forced nonpaid leave? We are seeing consumers who are quickly downsizing their spending after a consumer spending bubble. This will take some time to correct unlike previous bubbles of the past.

I still know people who like Obama. You can’t talk to people who watch Olbermann and maddow.

You know not just one, but both of them?

Rhetorical Question: Do I see Johnny Tremain and the Sons of Liberty marching from the Liberty Tree in determination for Liberty?

:-)...Sorry, Sarcasm just comes naturally anymore. I gag when I hear 0 because I dread hearing the media lovefest that follows any one of his pronouncements. God save America.

Exactly, Unemployment hit 9.7 percent and i would not be surprised if it hit 10 percent by the end of the summer and 11 percent by the end of the year

We told a woman we know that Glenn Beck is coming here in Jan. to appear at a local theater.

We asked her if she wants to go because we know she’s a democrat who loved Hillary, and we would like to convert her. She declined the offer and started ranting about the Fox News Channel. That’s when she told us she watches Olbermann and maddow.

This woman has a good job with excellent medical insurance, so I told her that we’re in danger of having Obama changing us to the Canadian healthcare system.

She said NO, that won’t happen. I know other people who still like obama. One of them is a principal of a Catholic elementary school. The other is a lawyer & his wife who are both Catholic.

Go figure....

I forgot to mention we also know a retired fireman who is a Viet Nam vet. He is a democrat who voted for Obama and hates Bush. He has not wavered in his support for Obama because he blames everything on Bush.

If I see this guy wavering on Obama, then I know that Obama has a problem. That hasn’t happened...

We have all been reading plenty about featherbedded firemen, cops and prison guards. Your retired fireman friend may think he’s comfortably set for life, but if the anticipated Obama hyper-inflation hits us he will suffer along with the rest as his fat pension becomes worthless.

That, and/or if his municipality starts paying him in IOU’s like CA.

People like that won’t change their minds until they get bit personally.

When they do, they’ll be the most enraged and wanting to nail up their Messiah.

The Obama Youth true believers are probably going to peel off first as they are suffering the most in this job market.

Unless he gets his private army off the ground and recruits them.

For my own part, I can’t wait to see what’s gonna happen when the elderly finally realize Obamacare is measuring them for a box.

Let’s hope it won’t be too late. It does not look like it’s going to go through before recess. In which case, the truth will out.

"THE JOB IMPACT OF THE AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT PLAN"
- Christina Romer, Chair-Nominee, Council of Economic Advisors
- Jared Bernstein, Office of the Vice-President-elect
January 9, 2009.

"I don’t believe it’s too late to change course, but it will be if we don’t take dramatic action as soon as possible. If nothing is done, this recession could linger for years. The unemployment rate could reach double digits. Our economy could fall $1 trillion short of its full capacity, which translates into more than $12,000 in lost income for a family of four...That is why I have moved quickly to work with my economic team and leaders of both parties on an American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan that will immediately jumpstart job creation and long-term growth.... I urge Congress to move as quickly as possible... it is altogether likely that things may get worse before they get better. But that is all the more reason for Congress to act without delay."
~ Barack Obama,
warning how bad unemployment might get if his $787Billion spending bill is not immediately passed, even without anyone reading it. January 8, 2009

Persistent job losses seem to be taking a toll on how Americans view President Obama's performance in handling of the economy and federal budget.

Given that the presistent job losses are because of Obama's policies it only seems reasonable that people would respond by having a lower view of his abilities. Of course Obama hasn't even had as much business background as a kid who has run a lemonade stand.
