Summit County drivers fuming over new fees

State law ups late fines, adds new road and bridge surcharges for transportation funding.

A set of new fees aimed at funding highway repairs and improvements took effect July 1, and officials at the local branch of the Division of Motor Vehicles said they've been getting an earful from angry vehicle owners since then.

While they didn't want to be named in the newspaper, the clerks said Tuesday that they don't set the fees.

“People are irate about the fees, but it's a state law. We just collect them,” said one of the clerks, describing how some vehicles owners have reacted to the changes angrily and expressing their displeasure at the counter.

The state can't raise taxes, so they raise fees instead

Only one-third of fees collected by state and local government from motorists go directly to road construction and maintenance.

Motorists gave state and local government $40.3 billion in 2005 for the ability to drive and own a vehicle.

After accounting for administration and overhead, $28.5 billion remained for all fifty states to spend in 2005.

Of this amount, only $13 billion was spent on state and local road construction and maintenance.

And you are an agent of the state.

To cheap, the cost to register a motor home should be a least a $1,000.00 per year. I really get tire of passing those POS and the drivers who don’t know how to drive them.

How very liberal of you.
The attitude you express is: “I don’t like it, so tax it.”

Nice.

The cost of administration and overhead is disgraceful!

When I was still active duty we would get the Combined Federal Campaign brochure and were warned that any charity that did not pass at least 95 percent to the actual charitable distribution should be suspect.

I know that Government is not a charity but 29 percent is just plain Communism. Giving people jobs so they will vote for ever bigger Government.

They're starting to look under every rock now. It's like Omaha, the city I live in. They're x millions short this year, but oh, the new mayor is driving a gigantic new SUV on an expensive lease. To boot, we're busy building a new baseball stadium that will be used 2 weeks a year for a 120 million. Other people's money is no object. Yet they can't seem to get basic services done on budget. Dumbocrats bringing rack and ruin wherever they go.

Read what it says about late fees.

So what happens to a member of the military who has his vehicle in storage while he is out of the country?

Is there an exemption for the military?

If not, he gets a big welcome home in the form of a huge fee when he gets his new plates.

Actually I would go for the ban, they are totally useless POS. You could stay at any motel wherever you want whenever you want and never touch the price of owning one of those POS. And yes I owned a rather large goose neck travel trailer at one time. Sold it to the first sucker that came along.

“can’t seem to get get basic services”

Standard threat they all use. First thing they say is that there will be cops and firefighters let go, etc.

In other words, you will not pay more to us in tax, TAKE THAT, you dummy.

A threat to punish, plain and simple.

this Summit County is in Colorado. The more famous one contains Akron, Ohio, where there are no limits to raising taxes whatsoever.
