Hillary Clinton has depicted the United States as a tough but fair global leader as she attempted to retake her place on the central stage of American foreign policy and diplomacy after weeks out of the limelight.
She chose the prestigious setting of the Council on Foreign Relations to reclaim her stake as the nation's chief diplomat after six months as Secretary of State in which after a burst of initial publicity she has struggled to be heard among other heavyweight voices in Barack Obama's administration.
Despite being well received overseas, and travelling more extensively than some of her predecessors, Mrs Clinton has been had to assume a back seat to a president determined to remake America's image in the world through a series of high profile appearances overseas.
Joe Biden, a vice president with years of foreign policy experience in the senate, has meanwhile visited Iraq and waded into the Middle Eastern conflict, while a host of special envoys in the state department have been the lead negotiators on the hottest issues. The limelight has eluded Mrs Clinton entirely for the past month as she has nursed a broken right elbow.
Her diminishing presence, followed by her public criticism of the White House this week for delaying the appointment of the head of US Agency for International Development, has prompted a flurry of speculation that her influence inside the cabinet will remain at a low ebb throughout her tenure.
Some observers have claimed that Mr Obama has brilliantly snookered his former rival for the Democratic nomination by placing her in a key job where disloyalty would paint her in a bad light.
Others have said the former first lady, who travelled widely overseas with her husband Bill, is being recast in a similar consort's role by Mr Obama.

I still want to know who shoved Hillary down the stairs.
I don’t recall a Sec. of State so deliberately misused before now.
She can press the "RESET" button and have it all.
Until or unless she does, she is consigned to cleaning the Kremlin steps.
Wow, I wonder if she ever thinks of quitting and challenging obama for the nomination in 2012.
Talk about a slap in the face. Basically saying that she is being recast once again as a First Lady. Which means she has less political clout than Michelle 0bama.
I'd probably say that Hillary's safe from taking orders from the 0bama girls, for now at least, lol. Hows that whole Hope & Change thingy working out Hillary?
Nope. In a short 6 months, she's gone from the penthouse to the outhouse. The Czars are all laughing into their rear-view mirrors as she's been left unaware that they were ever a threat.
She tries to pull anything now and it will be seen as sour grapes due to her diminished capacity.
Interesting take.
Hillary is the Obama’s (pick one) black/mexican/russian maid.
Who shoved her down the stairs?
“Wow, I wonder if she ever thinks of quitting and challenging obama for the nomination in 2012.”
Exactly what I’ve been thinking. She should quit now (and loudly, as in - “this guy is ruinous to our nation”) and challenge him in 2012. It’s her only hope to change thingies. Otherwise, she and Bill are ruined. Forever.
I don’t think Hillary will be challenging anyone.
Have you seen her now? With her arm in a sling?
See the look on her face?
It’s just amazing what a lobotomy can do.
She is one of the spiders in the bottle; survival has supplanted supremacy as her prime directive.
She and Huma her Saudi agent of influence will bide time.
Caption for your Photo: I should have demanded a position as a Czar.
“I dont think Hillary will be challenging anyone.”
If she doesn’t, she’s dead. Kaput. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Nothing.
And then, there’s Zero.
Depression or they can do like they did Inspector General Walpin and once again play the senility card.
She’s done. Obama’s press will write fawning stories about her any time she pushes the buzzer, but that would end in a second if the old witch actually became a threat to the king.
She’s done. And I don’t care. Just an older naggier version of O with that shrill voice.
“Depression or they can do like they did Inspector General Walpin and once again play the senility card.”
I don’t think Bill would let them get away with that. It would split the party.
Maybe not. Jeeze, so many moves and not enough chess pieces.
Time for Hellary to wipe off the dust from the old Helen Reddy 45 hit single. What a disappointment she is to PUMA’s everywhere.
Yeah, she is “shrill”.
She's a huge lib but I don't think she's anywhere close to zero on being so naive or such a raging Marxist. If Hillary = Bernie Sanders on the Socialist meter then Mr. Mom Jeans = Lenin.
