Ohio jobless rate hits 11.1 percent (Highest in Decades! Obama gamble loses in bell-weather Ohio)

COLUMBUS — Ohio’s unemployment rate jumped to 11.1 percent in June, up from 10.8 percent in May and the first time in nearly 26 years that the rate has topped 11 percent.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released the rate on Friday, July 17.

“Ohio’s labor market continued to weaken in June,” Douglas Lumpkin, ODJFS director, said in a press release. “Significant job losses in both the goods-producing and service-providing industries led to an increase in the unemployment rate to 11 .1 percent.

The state’s nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 33,000 over the month, from 5,133,200 in May to 5,100,200 in June.

The number of unemployed workers, however, increased to 662,000, up from 647,000 in May.

During the past 12 months, the number of Ohioans out of work has climbed by 279,000 from 383,000.

In June 2008 the jobless rate was 6.4 percent. The unemployment rate hadn’t been above 11 percent since an 11.2 percent rate in August 1983. The June jobless rate marked the third straight month the rate has been in double digits, starting with a 10.2 percent rate in April.

The national unemployment rate in June was 9.5 percent, up from May’s 9.4 percent rate.

In the Dayton area, Veronica Adkins, Kettering branch manager for Spherion, a recruiting and staffing company, said her office is seeing a lot of people who worked for Delphi and General Motors.

"The quality of people we're seeing is a lot different," she said. "You see a lot more qualified people. Usually at this time of the year her company sees lots of requests for seasonal employment but that's changed," said Adkins.

"We're not seeing seasonal orders," she said. Companies are doing more with less in areas of seasonal employment such as landscaping and warehouse work, she said.

Obama’s plan is WORKING! Joe Biden just said so.

That's right! All we have to do is keep spending that money and we'll be out of the hole in no time.

Extra bonus question: How many months need to pass before this is no longer Bush's fault?

You’re right about us not having the income tax and a reasonable sales tax. In fact, that is why many millionaires keep their primary residence here even though they spend most of their time in other states, such as California. Tiger Woods would be a good example.

In the Baraqqis view, it will be Bush's fault FOREVER. Hopefully in the voter's view, by 2010.

But, but, but...Sherrod Brown and Ted Strickland ran in 2006 almost exclusively on a platform of bringing jobs back to Ohio...you can’t possibly mean they lied. Why, the next thing you know, you’ll be suggesting that Obama isn’t for the common man and reforming the system. (Of course they lied, they’re Dems, aren’t they?)

Don’t blame Ohioians too much. Obama pimped ACORN and the SOS there for the win.

Does this help Kasich and the GOP in general in the state or will it always be ‘Bush’s fault’?

Bellwether. A wether is a neutered ram; tie a bell around his neck, and the flock follows him. Hence, a bellwether is a leading indicator. Meteorology is not involved.

In Ohio we have an income tax, nearly the same sales tax, and taxes and fees on everything imaginable and something like the 3rd highest business tax in the nation and one of the highest in the world.

And the Ohio CAT tax implememnted last year on business grossing over $150k.

You are part time compared to us. We in Michigan are at 15%. Jenny is Blowing Us Away! For sure.

This is such a business-unfriendly state. Taxes are compounded by restrictions are compounded by a questionable labor force.

When uber-liberal Obama and uber-liberal Strickland can’t talk liberal GM and Ford into staying in this state, then something is bad wrong here.

Strickland’s Plan:

1. Slot machines.
2. Tax increases.
3. More money spent on education (read: local tax increases)

The guy is an ObamaBot, and his puppet master and he don’t have a clue.

‘bammy TOLD THEM he was going to bankrupt their main industry - coal,

and they still went blue.

Guess they got to “make history” and “vote for the cool black guy”. That and a dollar might get you something to eat.

Obama’s plan is working...

Exactly (NOT SARCASM), just like the similar plans of his communist soul brothers Lenin, in the Soviet Union, and Mugabe, in Zimbabwe, worked. He's an American and America hating communist and secret Mudslime. What else could be expected from him? His so-called "Czars" are actually commissars, modeled closely after the same kind of officials in the old Soviet Union, who were established in offices parallel to the regular government offices to supervise the regular government offices and keep them true to the party line.

Ohio has been emulating Michigan in its economic approach, embracing Democrats while going into the sewer.

And in local government, i.e. many mini-Detroits popping up all over the state.

I am originally from Ohio and we had people on here saying Strickland wasn’t so bad. Bet me — he is a Dem.

A recession is when your neighbor is out of work.

A depression is when you are out of work.

A recovery is when Obama is out of work.

Wait until the democrats create a 20% unemployment!

In Ohio we have an income tax, nearly the same sales tax, and taxes and fees on everything imaginable and something like the 3rd highest business tax in the nation and one of the highest in the world. If you’re a business, would you want to come here?

Allen County [Ohio] commissioners want to increase taxes, which is upsetting a lot of people. When things are bad, the first thing politicians do is make them worse for those who are working. The other day, a guy came to my home and asked to do yard work. I was just on my way out to buy new hedge trimmers, and decided to give him the money instead. He did a good job, and I felt so bad for him. I had been in his position a time or two, but it's worse now, because it's lingering and getting worse with each day democrats are in office. Now is the time to speak out against Obama and Pelosi's gang, and while we are at it, those of us who can afford to, let some laid off worker mow the lawn, or something. This is a good time to help each other, because the government sure isn't doing a good job of it.
