U.S. Aegis destroyer makes rare port call at Yokohama passenger terminal

YOKOHAMA — The U.S. Aegis destroyer John S McCain made a rare port call by a U.S. military ship at an international passenger terminal in Yokohama on Tuesday on what the U.S. Navy in Japan calls a goodwill mission.

The John S McCain, based at Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, arrived at the Osanbashi terminal for large passenger ships. U.S. military vessels usually use the U.S. military facility at the port known as the Yokohama North Dock when they make port calls in Yokohama city. The destroyer will be opened to the public Wednesday. Yokohama is now celebrating the 150th anniversary of the opening of its port. The Osanbashi terminal is near the Minato Mirai area, a popular tourist spot in Yokohama.

The USS Juan McCain? Shouldn’t it be sailing up the Rio Grande to rescue illegal aliens? Sad. His naval duty was honorable but he has been a traitor in the Senate.

The ship is named for the Senator’s father and grandfather.

I’m guessing, but I’m sure the ship is named after Admirals John S. McCain and not the current bearer of the name.

The McCain was actually looking for the Cliffs of Mohr, also known as the "Cliffs of Insanity." That's what Vizzini calls them anyway.

Someday they will name a toilet in downtown NYC after the current McCain, if he is lucky.

Sorry. My mistake. Two honorable men.

The grandson was honorable in the Navy. Later he became a friend of faux navy vet John Kerry when McCain reached the Senate.

I agree. The vessel carries sensitive, classified equipment especially when the ship has the ability to shoot down missiles. Whose stupid idea was it to let the public in?

I’ll bet it was Hitlery and Obama. Nice way to make sure they get their campaign coffers refilled for 2012 by making sure the Russians and Chinese can get lots of intel on our latest Aegis technology.

That is the most stupid idea of bringing people into a classified naval vessel. It had to be an Obama idea.

I’m sure Obama will next order a F-22 to visit a russian air force base and let them hook laptops up to it. All in the name of making sure they don’t get their feelings hurt over us having a 5th generation fighter.

I probably will. When I was the Civil Air Patrol, I saw a F-117 Nighthawk. The security around that plane was so tight, even CAP members were not allowed to get near it

Will there be security around that ship’s “sensitive” areas?

My father served on the USS John McCain as a radarman, after the Korean war and before the Vietnam conflict. He never had any good stories, so I pestered him.

Finally he shared his story: His ship was tasked with escorting ROC supply ships to the island(s) of Matsu and/or Quemoy in the Taiwan Strait. The supply ships carried artillery shells and other armaments. The Chinese communists had dialed in their artillery and hit the ROC ship while purposely avoiding the American ships. The ROC ship exploded violently and went down fast. His ship, behind the supply vessel, then plowed through the screaming survivors without stopping to assist. Their orders were to continue. He never came out and said it, but it was apparent he was still bothered by the screams of the men in the water who were left to die.

I think he said it was during the First Taiwan Strait Crisis. His story brought home the horrors of war for me, and it is why I hesitate to fully endorse a civil war in this country, even though I see the writing on the wall..
