Richard Cohen: Sotomayor is good, but was she the best we could find? (reluctantly praises Scalia)

A political ad that lucky New Yorkers get to see on television begins with "A million lawyers in America" and goes on to wonder about certain no-bid contracts in nearby New Jersey that will not concern us today. But every time the ad runs, I cannot help thinking about Sonia Sotomayor: A million lawyers in America and Barack Obama chooses her for the Supreme Court.

Obama picked her because she’s Hispanic...no other reason.

Democrats are the true racists.

Well if you wanted less than room temperature IQ, there aren’t that many judges that would qualify.

She’s there as just a stooge ...

Cohen writes "My admiration for Scalia is constrained by the fact that I frequently believe him to be wrong. But his thinking is often fresh and his writing is often bracing and, more to my point, he has no counterpart on the left."

He (Scalia) has no counterpoint on the left, Mr Cohen, because liberalism is the last refuge of the intellectually mediocre.

Cohen almost always deserves a barf alert. That being said, it’s easy for him to show a minuscule amount of intellectual honesty here. He knows her nomination is a done deal. If there were any doubt, you’d never see Cohen write something like this. Instead he’d be calling everyone a bigot like the rest of the lefties.

“get me a Hispanic dame”

she fit the bill

He didn’t care if she could do the job, all he cared about was her genetic makeup and if she had boobs and job as a judge somewhere

If he just wanted Hispanic, he could have picked somebody like, say, Miguel Estrada...yeah, right.

He wanted an affirmative action stooge, not just any Hispanic. She even ruled against two Hispanic firefighters because they had actually passed the test on their own and didn’t need affirmative action.

This is why I am thrilled with Sotomoron. She is a mental midget, and will never be able to convince Anthony Kennedy to ever support her position. I predict, like Thurgood Marshall, she will never write a single opinion of merit. she will spend her career isolated from colleagues who reversed her 3 times and don't respect her.

Cohen displays an obvious sense of displeasure here over the quality of liberal Supreme Court justices. I think some of these folks really resent the fact that Sotomayor will be remembered as one of the two most intellectually mediocre justices of the last 50 years (the other being Thurgood Marshall).

She is, as everyone has pointed out, in the mainstream of American liberalism, a stream both intellectually shallow and preoccupied with the past.

That's gonna leave a mark...

Hilarious. Political correctness has ruled the liberal mind for 40 years, and now they wonder why they can’t find an original thought!
