I know excerpts must be used, but surely you can give us a little more than this?

Identical twins from Aberdeenshire are retiring from the Army after notching up a century of service between them - in nearly identical careers.

Majors Jimmie and Ron James, 65, both joined the Army on the same day in 1959 and were promoted on the same day for almost every rank in their careers.

The headline leads one to believe they retired from the Army after serving for 100 years.

Thanks for the info.

I know better than to just blindly click on some link unless I am more than a little interested.

From the BBC story:

“Identical twins from Aberdeenshire are retiring from the Army after notching up a century of service between them - in nearly identical careers.

Majors Jimmie and Ron James, 65, both joined the Army on the same day in 1959 and were promoted on the same day for almost every rank in their careers.”

These guys joined the Army at the age of 15? That’s a little unusual isn’t it? I think my father was able to join the (Canadian) Navy in 1959 at the age of 17, and that required permission from his parents. He retired in ‘94 with 35 years of service and would have been 67 this year.

“”The brothers, from New Pitsligo, were 15 when they joined the Army at the same time, after seeing an advert.

“We saw an advert in a comic, asking if we’d like to learn a trade in the Army,” Jimmie said.

“We’re from a little village in the north east and we thought there’s nothing here to do so we sent off the paperwork.”””

My father and his twin brother have a similar story. My Uncle joined the Active duty Air Force and retired as a Major. My father joined the Air National Guard, toward the end of his career switched to the Air Force Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with over 38 years of service. My brothers, twins, have done virtually the same thing! One is currently a Captain and the other was just promoted to Major.

They were all enlisted first and became officers later, Mustangs!

Between my father and myself and all my brothers, we have nearly 150 years of service and counting. And now there are two sets of girl twins who could grow up and continue the tradition.

I’m always glad to see these kind of stories!
