DONNA U.S. Border Patrol agents thwarted an apparent kidnapping in progress Thursday night during a traffic stop south of the city.
Pulling over a vehicle they suspected to be hauling a load of illegal immigrants, they instead found a man tied up in the backseat, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said.
The two alleged abductors immediately fled into a cane field near the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 493 and Military Highway, prompting a five-hour manhunt before both were placed into custody.
We still have our victim here, the sheriff said. Were trying to talk to him and figure out what to do.
The alleged victim told sheriffs deputies that he had been sent to the United States to set up a crew of men to smuggle drugs into the country, the sheriff said.
Investigators believe that when he failed in his mission, the two kidnappers illegally crossed the border planning to kidnap him and bring him back to Mexico to answer to their bosses.
The names of the alleged kidnappers had not been released as of Friday morning. Both men remain in the custody of the Hidalgo County Sheriffs Office pending the filing of formal charges.
Their purported victim an illegal immigrant -- also remains in custody, while sheriffs deputies decide what to do with him until his captors can be brought to trial.
Do we keep him here in the U.S. and let him run loose knowing hes a crook? Treviño said. Or can (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) keep him in custody with us until it goes to trial?
Doing the kidnapping that Americans won’t!
Lupe, dude! There are Border Patrol and ICE all over your country. Call somebody.
Not again, this sound like another one of those , us attorney, give citizenship to admitted drug smuggler, in return for testimony. They are all three illegals, deport them all.
No surprise here.
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
Someone warned me one time not to say too much about what I know of illegal activities...
Screw it...Maybe a FReeper who may work in the ICE or BP wouldn’t mind giving a holler sometime...
My nieces (by marriage) boyfriend is a cayote, who works the route between Alice, Texas and Houston on an on/off rotation...There are a few places in Pasadena, Texas he drops them off at for further distribution into the country...
The ICE division here in Houston seems to be indifferent or overloaded to deal with any obvious tips like these...
The problem is more than we can handle...That’s what the problem is...
The irony of the issue is the rate of people coming in illegally is dropping, in anticipation of a federal amnesty deal...Why risk getting caught in the current system, when they can wait for this and come over in daylight with their heads held high...
That’s what I would do...
I can understand now why they’re called the Alice Coyotes!;^)
See if we can find someone, stevie.
