Pew Environment Group Launches Project to Highlight Link Between National Security, Energy, Climate Change

The Pew Charitable Trusts has announced a new project designed to gather and share with the public viewpoints on the critical links between national security, energy, and global warming.

Former Senator John Warner (R-VA) will work the Pew Environment Group on the Pew Project on National Security, Energy, and Climate, which will bring together science and military policy experts to examine new strategies for combating climate change, protecting national security, increasing energy independence, and preserving the nation's natural resources. Warner will work exclusively with state and municipal governments, the Obama Administration, local organizations, and military, security, and climate experts in select U.S. cities to address the climate-security nexus.

A recent CNA Military Advisory Board report identified a series of risks posed by U.S. energy policies and practices and warned that "business as usual is perilous because of the converging national security risks of energy demand and climate change." Similarly, the National Intelligence Council recently found that global warming could directly impact the United States by threatening energy supplies, damaging military bases, increasing food and water shortages, and stressing the economy.

"I am highly honored to join Pew's efforts," said Warner, who in 2006 co-sponsored the Climate Security Act with Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT). "I spent thirty years in the U.S. Senate working on behalf of our men and women in uniform serving our country and on the issues related to the impact of climate changes on their future military roles and missions. Leading military and security experts agree that if left unchecked, global warming could increase instability and lead to conflict in already fragile regions of the world. We ignore these facts at the peril of our national security and at great risk to those in uniform who serve this nation."

On one hand, Republicans need to be in those conversations to talk some reality to them.

On the other hand, I wonder if this is yet another GOP Presidential-wannabe trying to pick up votes from Global Warming believers?

“Preserve natural resources” is code speak for “tax the crap out of everybody”.

We used to live in the Peoples Republic of Northern Virginia, and we are still convinced that Mark Warner got to be Governor because people thought he was John Warner.

In southern VA also. Although one can't say much for John Warner either.

I grew up learning that Communism was the plague of ignorant societies. No shortage of that now in the United States.

The headline is incorrect.

Mark Warner is a (pretend moderate) D and current Senator

John Warner is a RINO former Senator.

It's easy to get them confused.
