Iraq Plans to Send 10,000 Students to Colleges in U.S., Abroad

July 25, 2009

WASHINGTON — Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says his country plans to send up to 10,000 Iraqi students a year to colleges in the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia over the next five years as a part of a new scholarship program.

Al-Maliki says stability in Iraq has allowed the country to focus on education after years of war.

He says there's great ambition behind the new program "because our needs are great."

The Iraqi government is funding the scholarship program. It will allow students to earn bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees.

The country plans to start with about 500 students in U.S. and British schools this fall.

Millions of Americans can no longer afford to go to our own colleges and Universities....Yet our government supports 10,000 Iraqi students a year, to occupy *our* schools?
What part of "the Iraqi government is paying" didn't you understand? Also these scholarships are for *study abroad*, not just study in America.

I pass by a local bar/restaurant most every afternoon and there has been some moron there several times a week with a bumper sticker that says:

Another veteran
against the Iraq war.

I am sometimes tempted to stop, ask who owns the truck and ask him if he thinks we're still at war, plus ask him who the other two veterans are........

Sure, like they paid us for ‘liberating’ them.

Isn’t that like getting assistance to pay your light bill while you upgrade your cable to include the movie package?

I don't care if the sultan of swing is paying.

Fact is millions of our own people can no longer afford to go to their own schools...

We need to educate our own people, make our schools affordable to them, not foreigners. Ya got a problem with that?

Notice how all the people making the dumbass comments are the ones who clearly have not read the article?

Methinks these are also the people who believe stuff because the media says it.

Here’s a dirty little secret about America. Everybody here is an immigrant, it’s just a matter of *when* your came.

Sorry Kudzu, you are wrong. The American Indians were here before this land was a nation.

I agree with you that the Iraqis should be motivated. I think you would agree with me that the 19 murderers on the four planes on 9/11 were motivated also. Don’t you agree?

Also, how many of those murderers were here on student passports?

I think keeping China, Europe and the Russkies out was sufficient payment.

Not a single one of them was from Iraq.

1. Indians came from Siberia too. Again, just a matter of time. If you want to play silly semantic games about the foundation of a nation determining immigrant status go ahead.

2. I agree that you're mentally deficient. How many Iraqis flew on the planes? How many bombs did we drop on Mecca?

3. So? Given how porous our border is I think we sound be more worried about terrorists coming form down south, than worrying about (substantially vetted) students.

More cheese with your whine?

I have a problem with your smug ignorance. These students are going to be paying *full tuition*. Which given the socialist nature of modern universities, means that they tuition(wealth) will be redistributed to Americans who can fill out a FAFSA(and receive grant in aid from the University, paid for by, drumroll, the inflated tuitions they are charging to the Iraqi students).

Do you always blither about stuff you have knowledge of?

No thanks, your argument is cheesy enough. By your account everyone on the earth is an immigrant.

Last time I was on a large college campus, it was clear, few attending the school were American...They had Hispanic studies, African American studies, Middle Eastern and Muslim studies, assorted Hindus, people from the Congo, Outer Mongolia, and they even had some kind of shrine for India on campus, with what appeared to be some kind of bloated voodoo God rising out of the center quad area.

College May Become Unaffordable for Most in U.S.

The rising cost of college — even before the recession — threatens to put higher education out of reach for most Americans, according to the biennial report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education.

Learn what the FAFSA is and get back to me. I take it you haven't been around a college lately.

Is regurgitating talking points via link what goes for "thinking" in your mind?

Yes, the above was a recent experience.

You should educate yourself regarding higher education in today's America

Occidental College even offers a course in stupidity.

You should consider enrolling.

The coming Muslim flood? What kind of idiotic comment is that? First of all, we’ve spent years, thousands of lives, and hundreds of billions of dollars to help the Iraqis. Do you believe that it has all been a waste? More importantly, there are over 1 BILLION Muslims in the world. You think that 10,000 college students is a coming flood? Moron.
