Ogletree’s idea of fun: call a landlord and pretend to be looking for an apartment in Cambridge. Then show up to look at the apartment with witnesses, hoping to be turned down. When he is not turned down he tells the landlord he’ll have to think about it and he’ll call back. Of course he doesn’t because he already has his Harvard housing.

It's simple. It's a social custom. Ritual. Like smokin' the peace pipe. It's just a human/social thing, and seemingly quite common throughout history and across cultures. The obviously correct thing to do is to accept the offer. Even if he doesn't drink beer, why does he have to point that out? It's tacky, rude, insulting, undermines the true nature of the gesture, which is not about the beverage. It just shows that Gates is a dick.
If he intended to drink something else, here's how you do it. You accept the offer graciously, without qualification, and when the day comes, you bring yer own of whatever, plus some extra to offer the others. I'm barely half-civilized and I can figure this stuff out.
