Obama's doctor bitterly disappointed by reforms

Dr David Scheiner remains a big fan of the man he treated for 22 years in Chicago. But does not believe the planned overhaul goes far enough to help the poor and uninsured, and will cost too much because of pressure from the health care industry.

The 71-year-old physician, who has treated low income patients for his entire career in the city's Hyde Park neighbourhood, believes Mr Obama favours an NHS-style "single payer" system, but backed away under pressure from the health industry.

"He's a pragmatist, he wants to get something done" Dr Scheiner told The Sunday Telegraph. "But this time he should have pushed back hard against the health care lobby."

He is bitterly disappointed in the way the reforms are being organised and says he was bounced from the invitation list to a White House event because of pressure from the health lobby.

"I was all set to go to an event, I got an email from the White House the Sunday before and then suddenly I was told 'there were too many people' coming," he said. "I think they knew I was going to ask an awkward question about the single payer option."

He contends that the reforms winding their way though Congress "could bankrupt us because there are no real cost controls and the big beneficiaries will be private hospitals and insurance companies".

Dr Scheiner argues that Americans have been terrified by the advertising campaigns of what he calls the "medical industrial complex" into believing that they will lose their own health care coverage if a government-run plan is created.

Dr Sheiner's concern is for the 46 million Americans who are uninsured today and who will be covered by a government-backed insurance scheme.

Section 152 Page 50: All healthcare services will be provided without regard to "personal characteristcs" which is not defined within the document as is understood to include immigration status.

What this good doctor fails to acknowledge is that the Golden Rule applies here... namely, those paying out the gold will make the rules in this game.

Don't worry, the only change will be the inability to get adequate and timely care, especially for those over age 65. However, you will get some counseling to ease your acceptance of an early death due to rationed health care.

There is nothing in the world (at least under the current system) preventing this physician from donating his time and services. I am more than happy to do this as well, have done it, and I truly believe that most physicians would be willing to donate a percentage of their time to treat patients for free.

The problem I have with people like this doc is that they want to dictate to the rest of society what they ‘have to do’, and take away voluntary action. This is wrong, and quite frankly, is not a virtuous position. I have know several very liberal docs over the years, and many of them were very bitter. I don’t think that’s good, for them or for the patients they treat.

I think the system should be set up such that we try to provide 5 star treatment for everyone, not drag the system down such that everyone gets ‘equal’ 1 or 2 star treatment. That helps no one. We should distribute indigent care among the widest group of physicians and hospitals as possible, and make sure that those indigents get five star care along with the rest of the patients being treated. This, in fact, is what most often occurs when indigents are admitted to a hospital (happy to discuss this with anyone, including the president and anyone in congress). One of the current problems is that certain hospitals get labeled as THE indigent care hospitals, and the other hospitals route indigents to them. Thus these hospitals take on too much of a financial burden. There are easy fixes to this without destroying the system, which is the best in the world, irrespective of what Dr. Steiner thinks.

I truly believe that most physicians would be willing to donate a percentage of their time to treat patients for free.

The sharks lawyers do it. My daughter, a lawyer herself, used to work for a nonprofit firm that coordinated pro bono work between the lawyers who were to do it, with the nonprofit groups, like church day care centers, who needed the legal services. Sometimes they would provide the services themselves, but primarily they matched private sector lawyers with nonprofit clients. Other similar groups coordinate the lawyers with indigent, small business, etc, clients in need of legal services. In fact her former group is now a part of such a larger group.
