Howard Fineman: Playing With Fire - Will the Birthers Help or Hurt Obama?
Newsweek ^ | July 28, 2009 | Howard Fineman

Posted on 07/28/2009 5:58:11 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The Obama White House may see political advantage in exposing the 'Birthers.' But they shouldn't discount the dangerous sentiment of the radical rejectionists.

In politics, dogs that don't bark make the loudest noise.

I was reminded of that on Monday at the White House as I listened to Robert Gibbs, the presidential press secretary. Even discounting for his ever-present mordant calm, Gibbs was noticeably laid back when asked about the blogospherical hysteria over the question of whether President Obama is a U.S. citizen.

More in sorrow than in anger, he lamented the need to discuss the topic—and then went on to discuss the topic. Rather than seem offended on behalf of the president—the first thing a press secretary learns to do—he seemed more philosophical, almost blasé about it all. It's a free country, whaddya gonna do?

"I almost hate to indulge in such an august setting as the White House briefing room," he said, "discussing the made-up fictional nonsense of whether the president was born in this country."

Born in the U.S.A. Jess Henig The truth about Obama's birth certificate.

Rebranding Hate in the Age of Obama Photos: Hate's New Look Key word: almost.

Fact, is, White House wise guys seem to think there is political profit to be reaped in encouraging—or at least putting the spotlight on—the anti-everything fundamentalists and public paranoids who are emerging at a time when the legitimate conservative movement and the Republican Party with it are weak.

When the water in the river is low, the rocks in the riverbed lie exposed. So it is with the party and the movement of that gave us Bill Buckley and Ronald Reagan and other worthies of the right.(continued)

Gibbs made some comment along the lines of “I could show you the president’s DNA, but it still wouldn’t convince these people.” Which is an indication that he doesn’t understand the issue at all, or is willfully mischaracterizing it.

I’d be very happy to see his school records and the passport on which he went to Pakistan in 1981.

The old quote is “Dogs that don’t bark, BITE the hardest!” because they sneak up on you and take you by surprise.

Fineman, what an asshat.

the movement of that gave us Bill Buckley and Ronald Reagan and other worthies of the right

Isn't it amazing that Ronald Reagan is now a "worthy" but during his presidential run and time in office the MSM hated him and constantly smeared him as Ronnie Ray-gun, a nit-wit, a reckless cowboy, etc.?

Notice how they keep linking the Birthers with the Republican Party, and wring their hands at how this will “affect” the GOP. Fineman - Ordinary Americans are behind this movement, not the Stupid Party.

It is very clear the White House and the media want to keep playing this up

This distracts from the health care disaster, from the cap and tax disaster, from the disaster of Obama’s economy, from the disaster of Obama’s Afghan policy

Hence why the media is pushing, pushing this story

Hence why conservative commentators are trying to squash this story.

Again, I keep repeating it, this guy is a 1 termer unless WE BOTCH IT.

We just gotta sit back and watch the show over the next 4 years, obstruct enough so there is a country left in 2012, and then take the country back

The more we focus on this, the more the mushy middle thinks conservatives are crazy, racist kooks who cannot be trusted

I wonder how it can hurt by asking why a person who was running for the president of America WOULD NOT be vetted? When people apply for jobs, there are checks in place to see that they are who they say they are.

The people who were responsible, including clinton, pelosi, and others KNOW the TRUTH yet they exchanged their INTEGRITY for personal gain.

Why would ANYONE sign, the first day of their administration, a bill to seal ALL their records.... and then we discover that he has over 39 social security numbers, some of which were of dead people, and that he lied about having 2 names, and lied and lied and lied.

We would be remiss by NOT questioning these indescrepantcis. How insulting for anyone to suggest that we should act like sheep and just go baaaaa master, bahhh master, while this counterfeit person stomps America into a bloody pool of communism.

We have been here all of our lives, and have paid taxes and worked and followed the rules. Obamanation has been a kept man all of his life, kept by the mentor of the Black Panthers, and the Saudi Arabia king (who obamanation broke his neck in order to bow and kiss his ring recently) ... bills paid by them who studied at the knees of Alinski.... And we aren't supposed to question this????? How ludicrous.

Ding, that is the strategy here. Birthers are what keeps the Obama’s in power.

The media, and the Israeli agent Rahmbo are keeping this issue alive to deflect attention away from the awful health care bill, the awful economy, the awful Afghan policy, and on and on.

This guys will be a 1 termer unless we botch it. Focusing on this damn birth certificate will botch it

When anyone applies for a job nowadays he or she must provide a valid ID and SS card at the very least, and more often than not a signed release so the prospective employer can obtain the scholastic records. For anyone applying for a position where he or she will be dealing with sensitive material, the background check is more detailed, and besides the above, a passport history and medical history as well as any documents containing any other name the person may have gone by will be required for review by the prospective employer. Of course, almost any employer will run a criminal background check.

The Obamunist applied for the most sensitive and high-profile job on the planet, and yet he and his minions and enablers would want us to waive any background check.

The Bush Presidency was weakened by series after series of charges. Beginning with "selected, not elected," to questions about whether he got out of the guard a few months early, to "no war for oil." to "Bush lied, people died," to "Bushisms," whenever he misspoke, to the 9/11 conspiracy theories, to Bush supposedly arranging for Katrina and either dynamiting or deliberately weakening the dams.

When these charges started being made, the Republicans had the WH and by smaller majorities, both houses of Congress. Now, the Rats have the WH and veto-proof majorities in both houses of congress.

Did their tactics work?

Of course, the Republicans spent a lot of time shooting themselves, and there were a lot of dirty tricks along the way. I don't have a problem with Zero having to deal with this stuff. There are different rules for the parties, of course. William Jefferson was caught with $90,000 of bribe money in his freezer and he's been re-elected, with some help from Denny Hastert. Idaho Senator Larry Craig moved his foot improperly in a restroom stall and was abandoned by all Republicans and is out of the Senate.

The media presstitutes are scare to death that the Marxist actions thier demigod democrats are taking to destroy the US economy and enslave the taxpayers to the federal oligarchy is going to awaken the people to throw the damned democrats out in 2010, so they are doing their smarmy best to paint the Republicans as fringe. As a Birther, I resent the GOP feckless fools being tied to the defense of our Constitution when they are no where near the issue. But then I’ve learned to hate the fifth column enemedia anyway ...

No kidding the GOP doesn’t have the stones to put up a fight on anything. They’re too busy hoping the democrats will like them enough to toss them a few crumbs.

Obama's spending hundreds of thousands on blocking court challenges is no way to prove one's innocence, is it? This to me is the single most questionable issue. Why? Ok, here......what makes more sense?

a. Paying an army of lawyers to fight it out.

b. Picking up the phone and asking Hawaii to post the BC.
