Ha ha, the hard scientists and engineers don’t tend to tolerate hysterical unscientific bullcrap.

My husband is a chemist and has subscribed to C&E News for years.
I hadn't seen this issue yet, but it looks like Baum has really stepped in it. The ACS is a very thoughtful, professional, and scientific body.
Hopefully they'll get rid of this loon before he does something worse.

I live in Ohio. It’s now July 29th. I have yet to turn on my air-conditioning this year, not once, not for a moment. I’m afraid the glaciers are coming back.

...his use of 'climate-change deniers' to pillory scientists who do not believe climate change is a crisis is disingenuous and unscientific. Absolutely correct. There is only one word to describe the use of this term, deniers, and that is POLITICAL.
It is in fact an attempt to set the mind to link those who deny AGW to those who deny the Holocaust of Jews under Nazi Germany. It was an outrageous assertion when I first heard it years ago, and still boils my blood today.
First, it insults those survivors of the totalitarian genocides of the 1930s and 40s to compare it to scientists having a disagreement of fact. Secondly, shouldn't a scientist be skeptical if the evidence is vague and incomplete? As Dr Hayden from UCONN so well stated, Baum's remarks are particularly disquieting because of his hostility toward skepticism, which is part of every scientist's soul."
Baum is no scientist. Heck, he's not even an editor. He is a POLITICIAN. That's all AGW is--politics.

Well, I guess since the monies have dried up, now everyone wants to get out in front of the truth.

IMO the meat of the article:
ACS member scientist Dr. Howard Hayden, a Physics Professor Emeritus from the University of Connecticut: Baum's remarks are particularly disquieting because of his hostility toward skepticism, which is part of every scientist's soul. Let's cut to the chase with some questions for Baum: Which of the 20-odd major climate models has settled the science, such that all of the rest are now discarded? [...] Do you refer to 'climate change' instead of 'global warming' because the claim of anthropogenic global warming has become increasingly contrary to fact?"

This article needs to be read in full in the Senate when the Cap and Tax bill comes up.

A long time ago, I learned that Science was about observation, data and proof, and there was always room for debate. And, the ones using the word 'deniers' should get a new dictionary and look up the word 'consensus'.
Ironically, this kind of Inquisition could stifle the most inquisitive minds.
