Obama insults the Philippines.

Another day, another gaffe. A few minutes ago in a joint appearance with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the Philippines, Obama stepped in it again.David Jackson of USA Today provides the details in his White House pool report:

Obama praised Arroyo for her efforts to fight terrorism, and her help in dealing with the problems of Burma and North Korea. He noted the Philippines is hosting a conference next year on nuclear non-proliferation. "We're going to have a busy agenda together," Obama said.

He said the Philippines is a small country, but, to use a boxing metaphor, it "punches above its weight in the international arena."
Ahem. The Philippines is the 12th largest country in the world. It is larger in population than France, Germany, Egypt, Italy, Canada & the UK. It also covers a vast area of the western Pacific including more than 7,000 islands.

Could someone tell me why Obama is now insulting the Philippines? Oh that's right — they're an ally.

Obama probably meant to say, “They’re a small people, but they punch above their weight class...”

Obama is ignorant. He and his staff don’t believe they need to do any background research before “opining” on any subject.

Maybe he can invite the Prime Minister to have a beer with him too. He’s running up quite a bar tab....

He knows nothing about them because they are not a predominately muslim country. If they were, he would be bowing and scraping all over the place with information about them, let alone another apology to them for the EVILS of the USA.

Obama consistently punches below his weight (and the belt) in any arena.

I’d hate to think of Hussein drinking a good cold San Miguel and ME not having one.

Christianity is the main religion in the Philipines. Most are Roman Catholics.

The Philippines has a large population and a large geographic area, but its GDP is small. It has to export people to work abroad and send money home to support other family members. This is not to excuse Obama, who has no sense of ordinary courtesy or gentlemanliness, unlike our previous president.

Reminds me of the "best and the brightest" in the Kennedy/Johnson administrations. They screwed things up pretty well doing the same thing.

Recently, someone summed up The One’s foreign policy in about the best way that I’ve seen thus far: “If you’ve been our enemy, then we’re sorry. If you’ve been our friend, then you’re sorry.”

Here's the thing: only "punches above its weight in the international arena" is enclosed in quotation marks. There are no quotation marks around the Philippines is a small country. That may well be the reporter's paraphrase. To know exactly what Obama said, we'd have to look at the videotape.

Gaffe or No gaffe: As yet undetermined.

The difference here is we don’t know anything about the Kenyan mutt or what he accomplished in school or in public office...all the records are sealed...
