In 56 and 62 and 63 U.S. Army troops were used to enforce court desegregation orders in the Little Rock schools and the campuses of Ole Miss and Alabama.Not quite the same as your scenario, but there was the possibility of violent resistance and no one in my circle, limited as it was to family and, at least in the 60s, high school pals,had a second thought about the use of the Army by Kennedy.

As for today the liberal parents don't see or want their kids in the military so they'd have no problem sending someone else's kid. As for secession, there areIMO three states that have even a microscopic chance of pulling it off. Two because of geography Alaska and Hawaii and one because of history, character and size, Texas.

It’s a different scenario now vs 50 years ago...That Major Cook debacle shows that Obama can’t count on the military to be in support of his policies if major portions of the military doubt his legitimacy!
