Dealers Race to Get Their Clunkers Crushed
thelede ^

“There is absolute frustration across the board,” Alex Kurkin, a lawyer based in Miami who represents several car dealerships, tells The Lede today. “As of this morning, they’re not really confident about any deals, and no one can give them advice about what they should be telling their customers.”

Mr. Kurkin tells us that the government Web site where dealers are supposed to register their deals has been crashing, and the dealers haven’t been able to plug in their information.

Barry Magnus, the general manager of DCH Paramus Honda, told us he was owed more than $80,000, and he wondered if would ever see it.

“Oh my God, what a mess today,”said Sally

Maggio said she generally makes her profit by reselling the engines, the most valuable parts of the cars she takes, but that’s not possible because (engines) have been rendered unusable

That cuts down the salvage value of the cars — and the incentive for salvage yards and wreckers to take them — to almost nothing

And the process reduces the supply of used engines for people who can’t afford to buy new car and come to the salvage yard looking to fix up old ones.

“If a dealer doesn’t have a separate document addressing this possibility, the dealer will likely have to eat it,” Mr. Kurkin said. “I certainly see lot of litigation over this.”

Michael Gerrard, director of Columbia Law School’s Center for Climate Change Law, said in a statement that the cash-for-clunker program is not a cost-effective way to reduce fuel use or greenhouse gas emissions. Any energy savings, he said, could take several years to realize, considering the time it takes the fuel savings from a new car to exceed the energy cost used make it.

I had to laugh at the guy who called talk radio yesterday and talked about using this fiasco to replace his fleet of aging pickup trucks with new trucks. What a deal! Now that’s what I call “hope and change!”

Another thing to recall about the “Cash for Clunkers” program is how it hurts the poor. The program will take these “clunkers” off the street and give them to the government to destroy. But these are precisely the kinds of cars that poor or fixed-income people tend to purchase. Most of these “clunkers” are of course in fine shape, but they are not “green” enough according to government determinations. So poor people who cannot afford to purchase new, government-approved (and thus artificially expensive) automobiles will be told to “go take a hike” – literally!
The government having melted down these “clunkers,” the market in low priced used cars will dry up, thus driving up cost and further hurting poor and working people as well as seniors and others on fixed income. Grandma who just needs a cheap old car to get down to the pharmacy for her prescriptions will thus be forced to walk or hire a cab, as the finance companies will take a look at her social security income and say “next!”
Cash for clunkers is an attack on the poor for the benefit of government-connected Big Auto big-wigs and GMAC-style bankster/moneylenders. As with most government programs, the poor get the short end of the stick.

the whole thing was a scam.

Bozo needed the sheep to spend money and so came up with this scam.

What is the point of giving up a car which is paid off to put yourself into debt by 15 grand?

It;s like the sheep which go out and get a hybrid to save money on gas and they tell all their friends how much they save when they fill up.
Problem is that you have just put yourself into debt for years to come in order to save money on gas.

It truly does not make sense to do that and yet these lefty sheep do it.

For instance my cars are paid off and they are 2001. Now why would I give it up to buy a 20 grand car and put my self into debt for years in order to save money ion gas.
It would take years before the purchase would pay off for me and by that time it would be time to get another car .

If only the left wing sheep had some common sense instead of just following their messiah all the time

The brilliance of the minds of our central planners in Washington is breathtaking.

If they’re selling the engines, they are breaking federal law.
I’m guessing the dealers you’re talking about are in Chicago, LOL.

The whole idea is to destroy old cars. To Hell with what happens next, people will never drive them again or use the parts. UAW Rejoice!

Well it fits the leftist template.

The goal of the Baraqqis is to either get you into an Obamamobile from Government Motors or riding a train or bus.

Fewer affordable repair parts makes maintaining your current ride less feasable and more expensive.

The only “cash for clunkers” that would have made any sense would be one that targets old cars that have failed emissions and can’t be fixed up. A very small percentage of cars on the roads are responsible for a high percentage of emissions.

This could potentially get old, heavily polluting and probably dangerous cars off the roads.

A net 4 MPG mileage gain does almost nothing for fuel use or any sort of pollution control.

It’s comforting to know the plan is running as smoothly as Amtrak.

I'd think it was real funny too.

IF IT WASN'T MY GOD DAMN MONEY.

I wonder when the states are going to figure out that this program is going to cost them millions and millions in future lost sales tax.

Yeah, that’s the idiocy of this. The government is in debt. It doesn’t have any money. So they grab money out of our pocket, then give it back to us after skimming about 75% for “administrative costs.” Of course, government being government, it’s probably impossible to track the actual costs of these rebates, but I’d wager that each $4500 check costs the taxpayer over $20,000 by the time you figure up the costs of advertising to the dealer, creating and distributing the forms, etc.

Maybe she could get those good people from AmeriCorp/ACORN to pick up her prescriptions...afterall, they have access to $8 billion of taxpayers money. They will be in the neighborhood harassing White middle-class people anyway.

Can you believe that your congress is giving your money to these thugs.

Hey! I’m used to politicians and their political B.S. Sometime, check on Gov. Jane Hull’s (AZ) clean air vehicle fiasco. She was paying big taxpayer bucks to buy “clean air” vehicles for people in Arizona. The enviroloonies suckered her into it. The people here were buying them and selling them to Californians and making a killing at it. ROTFL!!! It surprises me that Rush Limbaugh has been on the radio for so many moons and yet politicians still haven’t figured out how dynamic and static scoring work. I picked up on it the first time he talked about it. Unfortunately, the politicians are all stuck on stupid. They can afford to be. Like you said, it’s our money they are throwing in the toilet.
