The Weekly Standard ^

Posted on 08/02/2009 10:28:41 PM PDT by MinorityRepublican

Several hundred Bundeswehr soldiers, backed by heavy “Marder” tanks and fighter jets, are currently helping about 1,200 Afghan National Army forces conduct major anti-terrorist operations near the Taliban stronghold of Chahar Dara, southwest of the city of Kunduz, where the bulk of Germany’s roughly 4,000 troops are stationed.

The fighting--which started on Sunday and involves looking for Taliban / Al Qaeda fighters “village by village and house by house”--is expected to go on until at least next week.

The Bundeswehr soldiers are part of the German-led NATO Quick Reaction Force (QRF), which provides force protection and serves as emergency back-up for Alliance troops.

Finally, as German media have pointed out, the current Afghanistan offensive marks the first time since the end of WW II that Germany’s soldiers are again involved in major ground combat operations.

German Army launches offensive... There was a time when those four words were the cause of real alarm in this world.

They’re actually being sent in to fight?

Catch me Thurston! I thought the objective of all Old Europe contingents in Afghanistan was to strenuously avoid the possibility of actually getting shot!

Is that an mg 44 that Kraut is holding? Best MG ever produced in WW2 and I guess it still may be.

The times are changing.......it's coming to a point that even Old Europe cannot ignore the elephant in the living room.

The ones who will stand up to the Islamaists are the same ones who saved Europe in 1683 AD. Germans, Austrians, Poles and northern Italians.

The other good thing is all these countries do not elect Muslims to run their countries.

Hey, Im glad that this is all their biggest offensive is.

Its lucky noone in Berlin got the idea, that a quite ride over to Paris in a Leopard II is just the ticket to boost the German army’s morale.

Heck, they could even save some money on ordnance! I hear some of the landmines in the beaches in Normandy still work! German made- built to last!

The US Military would be better off getting rid of M16 and switch to H & K.

Contrary to the article, the “Marder,” which is pictured, is not a tank but is an infantry fighting vehicle, similar in concept to the US Bradley IFV. The current German heavy tank is the Leopard.
