mean-spirited? It is either true or not. To be mean II think there has to be some truth to it. If you call a lean and trim person a fat slob, that wouldn’t be mean just stupid. Calling an overweight person a fat slob would be mean. Likewise a horror image of Obama with socialism has more than a little truth to it and some could choose to see it as mean. As in it is mean to tell the truth when I don’t like that truth.
