Businesses, Obama Feuding Over Mexican Truck Law

WASHINGTON -- U.S. business groups are growing increasingly frustrated with President Barack Obama's failure to resolve a cross-border trucking dispute with Mexico they say has threatened thousands of American jobs.

"We've got companies that are really concerned," said Frank Vargo, vice president for international economic affairs at the National Association of Manufacturers.

"Our calculation is that we've got 15,000 jobs at risk and the longer this goes on, the more likely it is that Mexican buyers are shifting suppliers," Vargo said.

U.S. manufacturers hold out hope Obama's meeting early next week in Guadalajara with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper could set the stage for action in Congress later this year.

But Steven Mulder, executive director of the Alliance to Keep U.S. Jobs, a group of 150 U.S. manufacturing and agricultural exporters formed after Mexico impose retaliatory tariffs on $2.4 billion of U.S. goods, said he has not even been able to find out who is charge of the matter for Obama.

Keeping Mexican truckers off our roads. Barak Hussein does good in this case.

Good luck with your search, fella. A good start might be to comb recent IRS records of tax-evading criminals in the U.S.

We are also giving Mexico $1.4 Billion dollars. Of course that doesn’t matter, it’s only your tax money. As for regulations on the trucks, that’s up to the States, not the Feds.

American companies cutting back operations, laying off employees, maybe going bankrupt.

Obama: But what's the downside?

Keep Mexican trucks off our roads! Mexico doesn’t even have reliable system for driver identification.

Obama’s only doing the bidding of the Truckers Union.

For the drivers are safety tests and DL tests, English tests...

The purpose is to decrease transportation costs by removing inefficiency in unload/reload at the border.

Yes, you are correct, the intermodal points are inefficient. The border crossing are also inefficient in the rapid transport of drugs and illegals into the United States. This will kill union and nonunion trucking firms alike as Mexicans working for $10/hr or less displace domestic workers.

Yes, and there’s the same problem in air transport.

We should make all planes from Mexico land at the border and transfer cargo to a US plane and pilot.
