It's a term that came from Obama's buttboy David Axelrod who, in his spare time, manufactures crowds for pickets and protests.
"Astroturf" is a term for a fake grass-roots movement. Previously, the term was used by Bill Clinton to cite the surface on which his female conquests were done in the back of his El Camino.
