Martinez, 62, who earlier said he would not run for a second Senate term next year, scheduled a news conference in Orlando, Florida, at 3 p.m. EDT to make an announcement.

In a letter to "friends," a copy of which was obtained by Reuters from a supporter of the senator, Martinez said he planned to step down after a replacement is named.

"My priorities have always been my faith, my family and my country and at this stage in my life, and after nearly 12 years of public service in Florida and Washington, it's time I return to Florida and my family," Martinez wrote.

Wasn’t Martinez one of the 8 or 9 Dems in the Repub Party who voted for Dear Leader’s sexist, racist, incompetent extremist Supreme Court nominee?

Probably Charlie Crist wants to appoint himself to the seat to ensure it remains in RINO hands and he has the power of incumbency heading into 2010.

I had the same thought and I'm sure that is the plan.

Charlie already said he will not appoint himself.

President Bush should not have stopped Katherine Harris’s bid for U.S. Senate in 2003.

Ann Coulter made issue of Bush’s(and Rove’s) ill-fated decision in that year.

He got a RINO!

I remember that suit!
Really not nice of the Bush brothers to forget the big favor Katherine did for them in 2000....
