A total of 31 people were detained in Birmingham city centre during the event, which is believed to have been organised on social networking sites.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said the arrests were made at various locations during the protest and a counter-demonstration organised by the Unite Against Fascism group.

The spokesman also confirmed that a car had been damaged during what she described as 'sporadic' outbreaks of disorder in the city centre.

Witnesses said scores of officers were involved in policing the rival protests, which had gathered near Birmingham's Bullring shopping complex.

One shopper, who declined to be named, said broken banners were left scattered on the ground outside the Bullring following the disorder.

Men are attacked as the demonstration span out of control

************************************

a counter-demonstration organised by the Unite Against Fascism group.

How quaint, the Islamofascists (and their Leftist enablers) are referring to anyone who dares oppose them as 'fascists'.  They only need to look in the mirror to see the true face of fascism.

Police believe the anti-fundamentalist rally was organised by groups calling themselves the English and Welsh Defence League and Casuals United, which is said to have emerged after British soldiers were abused by Islamic radicals at a homecoming parade in Luton.

Sounds like the 'reception' that many of our heroic Vietnam-era soldiers received from the hippies and the Left when they returned home.  Hopefully our British Friends will soon allow their brave soldiers to fix bayonets while in parades and use them if necessary......

Islamic courage. Here we see the bold Muzzies piling on to somebody they already have on the ground. In an earlier shot, a swarm of young Muslim thugs was attacking an older gent whose crime was to be seen carrying a Union Jack.

Obama would be proud.

Obama would be proud.

Indeed...apparently the Islamofascists were listening to him when he said 'punch back twice as hard'.

I hope that the photo of the older gent with the Union Jack being swarmed by young muzzie thugs will become viral.

I expect another 'apology to the muslim world' from zero on 9/11, so 9/12 may be quite 'interesting'.

Odd how little detail the Daily Mail provided on exactly what happened. Can't tell who was peaceful and who wasn't, or who started the unlawful behavior. Just a complete mystery, I guess.

The Daily Mail isn’t the most reputable paper in the world.

It doesn’t say but the non-Muslims in these photos could be BNPer’s. British National Party. And, they are pretty much facists and racists. I might get some argument from British freepers about this but if you ever listen to a BNP raving it always goes about like this ‘Foreigners! The foreigners! The foreigners!’ ad naseum.

I am one of those foreigners they’re always raving about though so I don’t tend to like them too much.

If it’s a BNP thug demo, it is as likely that they instigated the violence pictured in the Daily Mail as anything else. I’ve little sympathy for them.

Here’s more info from the BBC:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_midlands/8191833.stm

Police in Birmingham have arrested 33 people during protests by anti-fascists and a group demonstrating against Islamic fundamentalism.

One protest involved a group known as Casuals United, which police said were made up of local football fans.

Another “counter-protest” in the city centre was organised by Unite Against Fascism, West Midlands Police said.

The protest, which began at 1800 (BST), is ongoing and police said disorder had been sporadic.

A police spokeswoman said public safety was an “absolute priority”.

Speaking before the demonstration on the West Midlands Police website, Superintendent Matt Ward said there had been a similar protest against Islamic fundamentalism a month before which 70 to 90 people attended.

He said the police wanted to balance the rights of protesters with retailers and shoppers who wanted to use the city centre for their normal business.

Your opinion.

I find that they provide a nice balance against the VERY liberal / Left BBC..

I just read them all and balance the presentations between them

Whoever they were, if they are allowed to demonstrate, then what words from them would justify their being attacked by others who disagreed with them?

In the US, all sorts of groups are allowed to demonstrate or march, and I know it is illegal to assault legal demonstrators whether bystanders disagree with them or not.

Strange reporting, with no attempt to report a sequence of events.

I have never really heard the BNP ranting about americans, except in the context of discussing their isolationist foreign policy....

The earliest stories on this are only a few hours old, so it could be that it's a matter of nobody having more information.  It's more or less a 'breaking' item, and reporting is spotty in those cases.

The AP is focusing on the anti-islamist protest being 'unauthorized' while the pro-islamist protest was "authorized'.  Other than that, there isn't much more out there.  There will probably be more details in a few hours.

I am American. I am a foreigner here. That is something they never seem to get. You know how many times I have heard that? 'oh, we're talking about the Polish people (or Pakis or whatever) and all the others who come here to steal our jobs and benefits- we don't mean you mate'.

Hypocrites. They have no idea what it takes to go to another country and try to start a new life.

The BNP are just British nazis. They can kiss my foreign ass.

Well, hmmmmm. Imagine if the KKK were demonstrating and the counter demonstrators were black. Now imagine the KKK kept shouting 'niggers!' at the blacks. What do you think would happen? Realistically.

I imagine something like that has happened here. Use your imagination a bit.

I like to read the Mail sometimes. But I always do so with a huge grain of salt. They do not represent a mainstream opinion and they are very much into sensationalism and yellow journalism. They are anti-foreigner. Is it any surprise if a foreigner like myself views them suspiciously?

first you have it wrong and the only people who think that are the ones who listen to the BBC , read the guardian or the left wing.

secondly
British people have a right to go anywhere and march anywhere protesting something, they should not be attacked by those who disagree or those who hate the country they live in.

Also the BNP never march or protest as a group as they know it would incite radical muslims like these

thirdly
the photo’s show love white English men being attacked by hordes of cowards

so are you saying that people of a country cannot protest against radical muslims in their country

as for the paper not being the best, well I take it you watch the BBC and think they tell the truth

the only reason the left and the BBC hate the mail is because they report on issues the left does not want to report

What do you think would happen? Realistically.

I'm talking about who would have violated the law and who would not have, not what is realistic.

So, do you think someone should be allowed to commit murder in retaliation for some slur? Or just a good beating that might put someone in the hospital?

Describe what you think should be legal retaliation for racial slurs.
